It was actually kind of an aside. She said a couple in California started a modest nonprofit Go Fund Me account to try to raise $1,500 to help one of the detained mothers to find her child. Within a very short time, perhaps only 24 hours they received well over $17 million dollars. Every cent is going to the cause.
I think its important to know just how this crime has mobilized people in this country and stop the despair of thinking nothing is happening.
Everyone isnt able to hit the streets or travel to the detention centers to protest, but everyone can give even just $5 to a cause.
And to be truthful my body marching for justice cant have anywhere close to the impact and benefit that the few dollars I give have.
Ive always known this which is why I have given a modest but steady monthly amount to charities that cover children, animals, refugees, legal issues and the environment for years. I live on a pension and social security so I dont have much, but I have enough to give a little bit every month.
Almost all of us can do this. $5 or $20 a month is affordable, and it does make an impact.
Edit to add a link. Evidently its a Facebook fundraiser

(37,648 posts)I am a retiree, so I have to watch expenses. But I can give something.
Also, there is a physical way to help in many areas. Not in mine...I live in redneck red America. I'm surrounded by Trumpers. I feel as if they'll point at me & screech with mouths open (like in the movie The Body Snatchers), when they realize how liberal I am. So far, they're not quite sure. (I haven't lived back here that long.)

If we can all do a little bit within our means, we will be a mighty force for good.

(6,594 posts)As you said, the goal was to raise $1,500 & I believe now they've raised around $20 million from 450,000 people in just a few days.
All those people donating all that money AGAINST a Trump policy. That should scare Republicans. Imagine what Democratic fundraising is going to be like when the election campaigns ramp up.
It's going to be a green wave that helps usher in the blue wave.

(53,410 posts)Im so glad theyre continuing to get money. I hope they continue to get much more.
Together we have great power in this new electronic age. Giving is only a few clicks away and takes a minimum amount of time. And the money goes quickly where it is needed and anywhere in the world.

(5,299 posts)Two days ago, she said that instead of spending money on presents, she wanted to donate to RAICES.ORG.
So, we did (through a different portal than this one).

(8,052 posts)I couldn't agree with you more. I've been going to the marches as I actually get very, very energized by them and find it fulfilling to be around like minded people; but I realize a lot of folks aren't able to do so. I have been kind of giving on a case by case basis. I donated to GoFundMe a few months back for the Parkland High School students' March for our Lives. I was also able to march with many others here in Los Angeles, and I definitely think we're making a difference. I'm on a budget myself, but I could certainly set aside a specific amount every month to give to any number of causes. I think it's great that you brought this up.

(53,410 posts)There is always human beings, with way too many children victimized by wars, famines and monsters like Trump. Together we do make a huge difference. Together we can stop and reverse the damage. The same goes for dogs, cats, and wildlife on land and in the oceans and we can save the planet. We are all needed, and the best part is we can do it.
