I sat with a friend today. She was in the surgery waiting room while her daughter had her gallbladder removed. It was in the hospital where I worked for 37 years. Toward the end of those years I was a supervisor at a pretty high level. I saw former coworkers and several came in to speak and give me a hug. There were mostly nurses and doctors, but the one that meant the most was a maintenance man. He rushed over to give me a hug. It made me think that I did my job as I should have. I hope he knew that I knew how important every job was.

I like your posts. Thank you for showing us that you are a good person like that.

But, you knew that. It's why the maintenance person remembered and liked you.

(11,567 posts)I have SOOO much added respect for nurses, after pretty major surgery to correct bacterial endocarditis. Nothing was too much trouble for them, although none of the patients abused their good natures.

(5,403 posts)When I began my internship, the attending who became my mentor gave us the "Ten Commandments" of being a doctor. Two of those were as follows:
Smile at everyone you pass in the hospital halls.
Learn everyone's name, including the ladies serving in the cafeteria and the housekeepers and janitors.
He wanted us to know that, even though we had achieved our goals, we were not better than anyone else, including those who might be doing more menial tasks. We were ALL working to serve our patients, and everyone deserves acknowledgement.
Thank you for sharing, and for clearly being a good supervisor.

(2,522 posts)Always be nice to the secretaries and the custodians. Not only is it the right thing to do, but they can either enable or deny you access to anyone and anything. This would also apply to IT people today.
It is not only the right thing, it is the smart thing to do. AND you end up with lots and lots of friends.
Always be nice to people - it's fun.

(6,936 posts)A TN nurse was my partner in a medical group, she was the absolute best. I can understand your coworkers' sentiments. Great job!

But perhaps his best new character is Frank, the hospital janitor, whos as close to a spiritual being as its possible to be. Frank is a big believer in finding what you need through helping others. In a tough world its some of the best stuff Ive seen. ❤️
