As Critics Assail Trump, His Supporters Dig In Deeper

By Jeremy W. Peters
June 23, 2018

LEESBURG, Va. — Gina Anders knows the feeling well by now. President Trump says or does something that triggers a spasm of outrage. She doesn’t necessarily agree with how he handled the situation. She gets why people are upset.

But Ms. Anders, 46, a Republican from suburban Loudoun County, Va., with a law degree, a business career, and not a stitch of “Make America Great Again” gear in her wardrobe, is moved to defend him anyway.

“All nuance and all complexity — and these are complex issues — are completely lost,” she said, describing “overblown” reactions from the president’s critics, some of whom equated the Trump administration’s policy of separating migrant children and parents to history’s greatest atrocities.

“It makes me angry at them, which causes me to want to defend him to them more,” Ms. Anders said.

In interviews across the country over the last few days, dozens of Trump voters, as well as pollsters and strategists, described something like a bonding experience with the president that happens each time Republicans have to answer a now-familiar question: “How can you possibly still support this man?” Their resilience suggests a level of unity among Republicans that could help mitigate Mr. Trump’s low overall approval ratings and aid his party’s chances of keeping control of the House of Representatives in November.

1. But he doesn't seem to be converting any new supporters.

The hard core 35% or so have dug in and won't budge, but he's not even trying to change the minds of others. Does he really have any idea that about 2/3 of the country doesn't like him?

I think they parrot what they hear from liberals, as if that is enough. They never get nuance, so they are just memorizing what some liberal said that seemed to persuade others.

3. So, his supporters are too stupid to think for themselves and just react with anger to the truth.

They are arrogant themselves like their idol, as well as willfully ignorant, don't care about anyone except their "tribe" and take any criticism of him as a criticism of themselves. How small to take the torture of children and stealing over 2000 from their parents with no plan to reunite them, and make it about people being mean to the torturer. What disgusting, small minded, POS she and others like her are. They are destroying America, just so they don't have to face that they fucked up and will in the end destroy themselves. That's why I'm OK with the tariffs ion farm items, they voted for him and deserve the results. The majority were smart enough to vote against him.

people defended slavery AND lynching of AA to "keep us in our place". Not surprised at her attempt to sound intelligently racist. Must be an understudy of david duke.

6. The call for his resignation

should begin at once for what he's done to these children for his own political gain, and is one of the highest crimes he could commit, intentionally hurting and damaging children for life. There should be no room anywhere in OUR government for someone like him, and we're equally as guilty if we allow him to stay. That goes for any republican who refuses to pull the plug on his destruction of our country. He's morally bankrupt, and a really bad person who's capable of even worse policies to hurt people with. The American people should be calling their Senators and Reps until he's removed. This is not over yet, like he wants it to be.

But the parents shouldn’t have been here,” said Lynn Dittbenner, 65, of Elk River, Minn."

I learned long ago that anything after "but" is bullshit.

That's the difference in mindset between trump's right-wing authoritarian followers - google "Altemeyer" - and compassionate people. Who the fuck would be evil enough to even consider separating kids from their parents as a deterrent??!!

Seriously, google Bob Altemeyer. You will understand the personality traits/mindset of these individuals.

16. Valuable insight of a lukewarm Trump supporter.

She doesn't love him, but if someone "insults" or disrespects him, she's on it!

I've had this feeling of how Trump successfully markets himself to his "followers": when he's the target of insults and/or disrespect, he amplifies it and tells his followers that THEY'RE the ones being insulted and disrespected -- and are they going to allow that to happen?

Of course, there's likely a secret buyers' remorse for supporting him and they're in it too deep to admit they made a mistake.

Gina's not exactly some rando conservative in Virginia (but Peters doesn't mention that):
