Heads up - potential hacks - FreeRepublic down

Normally - I'd give a cheer for FreeperVille taking a dump - but since their outages have, somewhat, paralleled the problems at DU - might be worth paying extra attention over the next few days for weirdness.

I was reading an article at FR - and the next page sputtered - and then - poof! Gone...

I'd like to take credit...!

Older software was even less likely to be written with security in mind.

.

Most hackers are expecting relatively new software to exploit. If you bury your back-end properly, they have no idea what they are accessing, and will not suspect old code, or with younger hackers, not even know how to exploit it.

It takes the quarterly beg-a-thons a hilariously long time to complete. And a few days later, the next one starts up lol

It wasn't election day - but FR has gone down at some key moments (for them!)

Might have been when Trump won the nomination...?

Load balancer? - perhaps a DOS attack.

nginx [engine x] is an HTTP and reverse proxy server, a mail proxy server, and a generic TCP/UDP proxy server, originally written by Igor Sysoev.

HA HA!

12. Well, I use nginx, too. It's a nice web server. :-)

It can be used as a reverse proxy or load balancer, but in this case I doubt any load balancing is required (lack of load). So it's probably just their web server software.

Actually quite a nice piece of open source software. Igor did a great job.

16. Amazing...they always seem to go down when they want to beg for even MORE money.

They already have their neverending quarterly beg-a-thon (which usually lasts pretty much through the entire quarter, until they make their goal with a day or two remaining, then they start the next one).

Hard to believe that it takes *that* much money to feed the squirrel to keep that site running...I'd love to see where all that cash really goes!
