'You're going to jail': Officer fired for abuse of power after pulling over daughter's boyfriend

The dash cam was mounted just below the police cruiser’s roof, in perfect position to capture the 26-year patrolman’s transformation from concerned father to authority-abusing police officer.

On that day in April, John Kovach’s 18-year-old daughter, Katlyn, was dating an 18-year-old her parents didn’t approve of named Makai Coleman.

She wasn’t responding to her father’s attempts to talk, so Kovach tracked his daughter’s computer to a friend’s house on West 34th Street in Lorain, Ohio, he told investigators. Then he sat in his patrol cruiser, waiting.

When Coleman’s silver Pontiac drove past, Kovach flipped on his flashing lights and initiated the traffic stop that would end his two decades with the Lorain Police Department.

“You can get out,” the officer told Coleman, according to a profanity-filled video of the interaction. “You’re going to jail.”

When Coleman asked why, his girlfriend’s dad told him: “Have a seat in my car. We’ll make [expletive] up while we go.”

Lorain Police Chief Cel Rivera and Safety-Service Director Dan Given said those statements and several other things that happened during a nearly nine-minute stretch were violations of the department’s standards of conduct and policy procedures, according to the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

“These actions are not acceptable for members of our Police Department, and we felt it warranted immediate dismissal,” Given told the newspaper.

I'm relieved that this young man is alive. This could have ended so differently. Sounds like dad is a racist asshole.

I mean just look at him! It's pretty obvious why the young woman's father was so concerned. Would you want your daughter dating someone like that? That watch he's wearing is just so big!

Certainly, though, the relationship between father and daughter is ruined, possibly beyond repair. I can't imagine that things will go well between the father and mother, either. That man has let his idiotic racism harm his own family. Worse, I doubt he will learn from it.

Very sad business, that.

As for your statement, I'm very sorry to hear it. That's very sad. I had an experience like that when I was dating. The young woman's father treated me very badly, and it destroyed the relationship. How is that a good thing?

I'm glad the dude is safe and alive.

I expect at least one incident similar to this every day. Once the head cockroach won the election, all the cockroaches feel safe to come out now.

Very sad times.

Not only the young man - but also the daughter, given the behavior of her father, could be in danger.

What sort of dumbass commits a crime he's recording?

I have no idea why the DA needs time to determine if a crime was committed. Kidnapping is already proven. Sure there are probably other crimes around abuse of power, but get this piece of garbage in jail where he belongs.

Per the OP, "She wasn’t responding to her father’s attempts to talk, so Kovach tracked his daughter’s computer to a friend’s house on West 34th Street in Lorain, Ohio, he told investigators."

She wasn't even using the computer at the time. (The full linked article mentions that she was hiding in her boyfriend's car at the time of the stop.) So how did he trace the location of the computer? Did he use law enforcement resources, or is such tracing available to anyone with the necessary technical skill? And is there a way I can stop people, LEOs or not, from tracing my computer?
