.....at one of the following points:
1) After he won the Republican nomination;
2) After he "won" the election;
3) After he was inaugurated;
4) After Steve Bannon left the White House;
5) At some other point.
While I didn't think he would (being a terrible person for 70 plus years isn't something you can just change overnight), I know there are people who are optimists and thought there was a possibility he wouldn't remain a raging ultra-conservative reactionary if circumstances dictated otherwise.
Don't be afraid to answer if you honestly thought it was a possibility. I'm not judging; I'm just curious.

(17,865 posts)we would be where we are today in terms of his behavior. My surprise has been that the GOP hasn't shut him down by now. History will not be kind to them.

(11,804 posts)But I thought it would be a sort of struggle; him wanting to be his destructive undisciplined self but in contention with more serious politicians - sometimes they would pull him back and sometimes he would strike out to do what he thought was best (which is usually the worst). I was wrong there - it seems he's successfully cowed most of his base and most congressional Republicans such that what few objections they make are pretty weak.

(30,817 posts)After the inauguration I thought he might, out of sheer indifference and utter laziness.
And then that one time when he reached out to Democrats Pelosi and Schumer.
Still, I knew he would be very bad. He has exceeded my expectations.

(10,048 posts)But honestly I was more frightened of theocratic small minded Mike Pence as veep.
I figured Trump would stay out of much policy decision making (unless he could make money from it), he would not touch abortion (sex was intended for male gratification), would tread lightly on anything religious (he obviously was not a believer), and would push any real work to his subordinates as he lounged about and raked in the money. Figured he would try once again to get in with the New York and Hollywood elites that have shunned him in the past. Who could say no to the POTUS.
This, of course, was before knowing any of the Russia stuff, when we were likely to take back the Senate (that looked pretty much assured), and when Hillary was predicted to win in a landslide.
I did not expect this reality TV narcissist mediocre at best "businessman" charlatan to actively seek to alienate our allies, destroy public education and social safety net programs, and pack the courts with anti-LGTBQ and anti-abortion/reproductive rights judges.
I was not surprised that he chose to give himself a tax cut, destroy labor and environmental laws, or propose selling off/privatizing our country's natural resources and infrastructure.

(68,667 posts)as a partner...a number of Dad's friends were bankrupted by Trump and he has always been a pig with women...I never expected him to 'soften' and he and his worthless father were big racists too... The central Park jogger case even after years and proof that the kids arrested were not involved...he still tells lies about that...I hate and despise Trump...he will leave the country bleeding and broken. He destroys everything he touches.

(42,613 posts)under the weight of his incompetence before it got this bad. I also thought GOP leadership would be so disgusted with him by now that they would let him collapse.

(16,646 posts)I was one of the fools that thought the GOP would come to their senses. By March it was obvious that wasn't going to happen. After that, I was fairly certain he'd never change. I was foolish enough to think that the GOP congress would try to manipulate him. Instead they've just fallen in line.

(50,303 posts)I didn't think he'd do much of anything other than figure out how to profit off the position. I do think there is a possibility that if Democrats become the majority in Congress he'll veer left in order to "win." He has no real loyalties. He just wants cameras on him and people sucking up.
