A new Democracy Project poll sponsored by the George W. Bush Institute, the University of Pennsylvanias Biden Center and Freedom House finds that half of Americans think the United States is in real danger of becoming a nondemocratic, authoritarian country.
Key findings: 55% see democracy as weak and 68% believe it is getting weaker.
Furthermore, eight in 10 Americans say they are either very or somewhat concerned about the condition of democracy here.

(2,787 posts)2. Probably healthy to be losing faith in Democracy at this point
Having to much faith in the system leads to not being able to recognize the fragility of our Democratic system.

(5,072 posts)3. I would say we no longer have a functioning democracy
We have the form (voting) but not the substance (big moneyed interests buying elections and politicians). Thanks to Chief Justice Roberts and the Citizens United case (and its progeny), we now have legalized bribery.

(9,273 posts)6. Too many structural things
That can lead to tyranny of the minority that our founding fathers could not anticipate. When the majority of the PEOPLE - not the states or districts - do not want ultra-right-wing leadership but get it anyway, it's a recipe for a real civil war.
