The Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and early 60's were a grass roots movement, that when it finally got the attention it deserved the politicians finally took notice.
I remember the same things being bantered about the Civil Rights movement, "how they were just a bunch of trouble makers", same rhetoric that is being spewed ad nauseum from the AG, and trump administration.
That didn't stop them, they persisted, and as far as I am aware the right to protest, and free speech is still protected by the Constitution

(129,376 posts)What you apparently consider the "first Civil Rights Movement" was actually, legislatively/legally, already the "fifth Civil Rights Movement".
I.e., some of us (our ancestors) have been at this for a long long time.
