(45,516 posts)Best of luck to Ben Jealous and Susie Turnbull. They might be able to pull it off with large turnout among the Dem base and their own constituencies of minorities and Jewish Marylanders.
Jealous was smart to choose a Jewish running mate in a state that has had some conflict between the two groups. And she's a she, which should help with the women's vote if we get caught up in an anti-Trump blue wave.

(56,828 posts)in Maryland and Massachusetts have popular Republican governors. I'd be surprised if the guy in Mass lost.
Another blue state may end up with a Republican governor in Connecticut as well due to the unpopularity of the current Democratic governor, even though he's not running again.

(67,782 posts)....because he did everything that he said he'd do if elected.
He took over after about 20 years of republican governors and seven years of corrupt governors. The state was a mess when he took over, and it's in much better shape now. It's a shame people don't recognize that.

(56,828 posts)but, most people see politics in the short-term, so if their taxes go up in the short term, they get upset even if it means that state avoids a financial death spiral that could be coming in 10-15 years due to state pensions that have been underfunded since the 1930s.
However, Malloy is not always the most pleasant person when dealing with the media, so that has not helped.
Plus, he's tried to govern more as a centrist - when Democrats had a supermajority in both houses, he backed off a bigger increase in the state minimum wage when a few noisy small business owners whined about it, and when trying to get more state residents to convert from expensive fossil fuel home heating oil and convert to more environmentally friendly natural gas or propane, he backed down on his big proposal to convert up to 500,000 state residents from home heating oil when some home heating oil businesses complained it would kill them.

(5,559 posts)Jealous is by far the more progressive candidate but might be slightly harder to elect than Baker. Hogan is moderate, not gaffe prone, and astonishingly well liked for a Republican in a blue state.
