The U.S. is the only Western country to make the Thomson Reuters Foundations list.
The only Western country to make the list was the United States at No. 10. According to Reuters, the U.S. appears on the list because of the rampant sexual violence American women face, such as rape, sexual harassment, coercion into sex and a lack of access to justice in rape cases.
. . . .
The U.S. and Syria tied for third place in a ranking of the most dangerous countries for women in terms of sexual violence. In the U.S. someone is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds, and 90 percent of adult victims of rape are female. In 2012, the United Nations reported that rape was being used as a weapon of war in Syria. Currently, ISIS militants have taken thousands of Yazidi women and Syrian girls as sex slaves.

A sexual assault occurs every 98 seconds
98% of rapists dont go to prison
1 in 4 women will suffer sexual assault in her lifetime
MY comment:
Now that Kennedy has resigned, and with a new extremist Trump appointment, life, health and safety for women in the US will only become even worse as safe, legal abortion is made illegal and birth control is made unavailable or illegal for most women. Not to mention education, equal pay and domestic violence issues. This will affect women in the United States for the next 30-50 YEARS.

that the way the GOP has been acting under tRump, half of the country could have no abortions laws in a year. I have a feeling Syria will be safer than us soon enough.

(6,535 posts)3. based on all the women I've known through my life, that 1 in 4 figure may be a bit low.
Just wait 'til the Christo-fascists get a couple of key rulings out of the new SCOTUS...if they could fully get their way, they'd push legislation that would classify women as property. I'm not even exaggerating.
