I lived in a country were women were told they should stay home rather than have a career.

My wife was not permitted to get credit in her name. There was no birth control. Abortion was illegal. There were no women's sports programs in school.

Gays were arrested and imprisoned. Schools were segregated. Blacks could not join most trade unions, everything was segregated.

I grew up in America in the 50's and 60's. You may not have experienced those things but you may soon get your chance.

There were the jobs section of the want-ads, which were divided by "Help Wanted: Men" and "Help Wanted: Women." The mens' jobs were the good ones that paid well. The women's jobs were teachers, secretaries and other clerical help, store clerks and nurses' aides, and none of these jobs paid a living wage (because it was assumed that you were either young and still living with your parents or married with a husband who would earn most of the household's money until you quit to have a baby. If you got pregnant while unmarried your choices were to avoid embarrassing your family by dropping out of school and staying for a few months at a church-run home for unwed mothers (yes, that's what they were called) until the baby was born and put up for adoption; or you could try to find an illegal abortion provider who might or might not be competent or safe; or if your family had money, they would send you out of the country to have it "taken care of." Or you could try to do it yourself by drinking various folk-remedy elixirs or using implements like coat hangers, usually with very bad results.

The good old days really weren't very good. I won't welcome them back.

I grew up in these years. I couldn't buy a house in my own name, I needed my Father to co-sign on the loan. I couldn't sit at a bar and have an alcoholic beverage without a male companion. I couldn't progress in my profession beyond the level of supervisor. My office manager, also a male and a recent college grad as I was, hired at the same time I was, got the job as manager and I got the job of customer service representative. I was finally admitted to the first class for females to be allowed for training as a computer programmer in 1971.

In spite of all these firsts for women, there was always the good-old-boy network that worked to keep us in place.
It's still very strong even today, though many do not want to acknowledge it.

that they wouldn’t be hired because it could deprive a man of a job, and he should always be the breadwinner.

alt right described 1950s is when America peaked culturally and it all when downhill from there. So it makes sense they are trying to emulate everything you had here in 1950s. No more and no less.

Because it was illegal to prescribe contraceptives to girls under 21 and unmarried women.

The anti-choice fanatics are coming for your birth control as well as your right to choose whether to carry a pregnancy to term.

My mother was the first one in her family to drive. Her mother didn't, and two of her younger sisters didn't until they were in their 30s. One sister never did.

But if you got t-boned by a man, it was your fault.

I think the general disregard for women is similar.

The country run by the "Greatest Generation."

They beat their children. They revived the KKK. They fought in favor of segregation. They were against abortion, but always knew where their girlfriend could get one somehow.

Hell I'm a white male and I'm still pissed off about it.
