(1,725 posts)My cruel adopted father was an International big game hunter who had SO MANY trophies of his "kills". And he had many videos of those horrible events where he was laughing and jumping on their bodies. Needless to say we didn't get along at all. I saw him on his death bed in the hospital, where they had to tie down his arms....and I saw the FEAR in his eyes. All I could think of was...Karma IS a Bitch. 1) Millions of people live in poverty without poaching.
2) Poaching is a violent CRIME as well as being CRUELTY for NOTHING. There is nothing magic about rhino horn. It is the same as our fingernails.
3) There are too many people on the planet, and not enough rhinos. And I say this as a mother whose only child died. So I know the pain of parental loss. I didn't run out and commit crimes to save my child.
There IS NO EXCUSE FOR POACHING!

Voltaire2
(13,213 posts)Human life is more valuable than (other) animal life, therefore anything a human does to survive, no matter how much pain and suffering it inflicts on other animals, even if it causes the extinction of an entire species, even if there are other choices of behavior, is entirely justified.
Is that correct?
Drahthaardogs

No, but I value human life more than animal life.
I also eat meat, wear leather, and.loke baseballs and footballs.
As an argument in defense of hunting a species to extinction.
Are there any limits on what humans can do to other animals?
Drahthaardogs
(6,843 posts)My position is, don't be so quick to judge these poachers and rejoice in their deaths. Most of them are woefully poor. They did not do this to buy a fucking Mercedes. They likely did it for food and shelter. It is why poaching is so prevalent in villages that border game preserves. It is a well known obstacle. In fact, when poachers are killed, many of the remaining villagers get angry and are less apt to help the rangers. Facts are facts and little emotional hissy fit don't change the reality of the world.
Bit this is DU, where the Pope gets castigated because he won't allow women priests, but if you disparage a radical Muslim ( the ones who stone women to death) you are excoriate. So there's that..

Neema
(1,151 posts)to feed his kids and send them to school. He would never in a million years poach animals no matter how desperate he was. He thinks poachers are despicable and deserve any punishment they get. Dealers or no dealers, if there weren't poachers willing to pull the trigger there wouldn't be species on the brink of extinction.
Duppers
(28,127 posts)Also, what is the root of this slaughter? Poverty in Africa existed before the huge market for rhino horns.
"Rhinos are being decimated by poaching. In South Africa, home to almost 80% of the worlds rhinos, more than a thousand have been slaughtered annually during the past four years. Thats 8,000% more than were killed a decade ago, in 2007. Last year rangers in Kruger National Park were called out to stop more than 2,800 incursions by poachersroughly eight every day.
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/07/wildlife-watch-rhino-horn-china/
Bottom line is Chinese medicine's crazy ideas about animal parts must be changed. The Chinese gov't makes insincere efforts to halt the trade.

(14,594 posts)I just can't bring myself to feel sorry for rhino poachers.
But................it might be kind of the same thing as the Somali pirates, where the Somalis are pirates when once they were coastal fisherpeople because a) Europeans and Japanese fished out their waters, b) European corporate interests dump toxic waste off the Somali coast, making it impossible for OTHER fish to come back. So they became pirates.
Is it the same with these poachers? What kinds of jobs are available there? Do the people have enough food? What kind of infrastructure is in place? Are there any safety nets for the unemployed? Is there national healthcare?
It may be time for the west to rethink its policies of colonialism and begin thinking of humanity as one species and the earth as our home - a home that we share with other wild species, and domestic species. Now, we treat ourselves like shit. It bothers me every day that over 25,000 people die of starvation. Why? Mostly because of the policies of the west, and our nationalism and capitalism.
And we treat our domestic species like shit, too. How many cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs are raised in brutal conditions, living in constant pain until death releases them?
And, of course, the wild species - we are systematically eradicating them.
So maybe these poachers are part of the overall symptomology of the disease, which is capitalism.
