Patagonia will continue its record of encouraging its workers and customers to be politically engaged by closing its doors on Election Day 2018, the Washington Post reports.
Citing low voter participation and its own history of advancing environmental causes, the outdoor retailer decided giving its workers a chance to vote was the right thing to do. Company spokeswoman Corley Kenna told the Post, Whats the most impactful thing we can do in an election? Thats to get people to vote.
This isnt the first time the outdoor retailer has made Election Day a holiday for its workers. The company also closed its doors on Election Day 2016 as part of its Vote Our Planet campaign. Patagonia again cited low voter turnout across the country as the basis for its decision and said that America needs strong leadership to confront the fundamental threat of climate change.
Since 2016, the company hasnt shied away from criticizing the Trump administration.
It famously feuded with Trump over his administrations decision to shrink the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments by 2 million acres. It launched a website, titled The President Stole Your Land, and joined a lawsuit challenging the legality of the administrations move to reduce public lands. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and Republicans in Congress fought back against Patagonia, calling its efforts a false narrative.
And the company isnt afraid to let its customers know where it stands, either. During the 2016 election, it hosted political events in its own stores, inviting customers to talk environmentalism and the role of politics in keeping the planet healthy.
Patagonia also used the opportunity to help customers register to vote. Its Vote Our Planet campaign was aimed at turning out environmentally conscious voters in races at every level of government. Spokespeople at the time told ThinkProgress, We want people to look at their Senate races, their House races, their mayoral and gubernatorial and attorney general races.
With their recent decision, it seems Patagonia wont be content to stay on the sidelines in 2018. Given its pro-environmental stances and stated opposition to Trumps policies, it shouldnt be a big surprise that it sees the 2018 midterm elections as similarly important.

(2,520 posts)My employer says vote, come in late, go home early, vote. I'm at booth 6am. Go out to breakfast with coworkers go in an hour late. If employers kept it simple, more would vote. Can't see it taking a day.

(25,816 posts)I lived there for a year or so. Long ago. A beautiful place, about halfway between Sonoita, Az and Nogales.
Sonoita Creek runs through town, and the shallow water table made some of the largest mesquite trees
I have seen. A green place, now the artsy folks have taken over, the old western bars are gone. My parents bought three old houses there, I rescued an old Spark gas stove from one and used it for years.

(16,939 posts)national reform on voting.
I like the countries where voting is "required/mandated." Nothing wrong with that.
WE should have a "voting 3-day weekend." Lord knows we love our 3-day weekends - so let's make some fun after we've voted.
Actually, I'd prefer/love to see a 24-hour voting day - with each time zone moving west starting one hour sooner - thus ALL TIME ZONES finish at the same time! No longer would we have Californians staying home because CNN has declared a national winner before they even get to vote.
Oh, and I'd love to see our voting laws put back so that we give EVERY AMERICAN a fair chance to vote!!!!!
(Yeah, I know, I sound like a "Miss America" candidate: "I want love and peace for the world and no more pollution and every home has a puppy."
But, hey, 'ya gotta' start somewhere!)
