New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has urged the state legislature to pass the Reproductive Health Act quickly, which he says would protect abortion rights if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
At a Long Island rally to protect reproductive rights on the day after President Trump nominated conservative Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Cuomo said a state law protecting abortion rights was more important than ever.
They are going to overturn Roe v. Wade. We need a New York State law that codifies Roe v. Wade into the New York State law
Currently, the New York State law is not as strong as Roe v. Wade.
Cuomo said that Republicans in the State Senate havent passed the Reproductive Health Act because they said it wasnt necessary since the same rights were already protected by the federal Roe versus Wade decision.
Cuomo also said he will sign an executive order to protect access to contraception by preventing health insurers from refusing to cover it.

GOV Cuomo & the Democratic Party has been there for human rights long before Nixon showed up from Hollywood.
Her voice is irrelevent to Como's governance.

I have no illusion that Cuomo is at any risk of losing, but he wants to keep his options open for 2020, so he feels the need to turn out as many voters in 2018 to show viability, and Nixon threatens to dampen his turnout.

Andrew Cuomo: States, use your power to protect women's rights
January 21, 2017
"We are entering a new political era in which women across the country may feel that their reproductive rights will be threatened, and all states -- not just New York -- will have an opportunity to take the lead in improving the status of women through their respective legislatures."

Nixon never moved Gov Como anywhere
When Nixon was in Hollywood making movies... HE WAS ALREADY THERE ON THE ADVANCEMENT OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS
She gets Zero credit for moving Cuomo on this latest Protection of Reproductive Rights.
For Gov Cuomo it is a continuation of his years of adressing & demanding NY recognize that "Women's Rights are Human Rights" ~ hrc bejing 1995
Nixon doesn't own that mantel of pushing Gov Cuomo on Women's reproductive or human rights.
HE WAS THERE YEARS BEFORE SHE SHOWED UP

(94,592 posts)Bottom line is that the regressive legislation on reproductive rights that existed prior to ROE is still the law in the land in NYS. Only now is replacing that a political goal, as is building a Democratic legislature to pass it.

(6,457 posts)Otherwise we could go back to the 50's and 60's when women really had no rights including abortion. Pregnancy was used as a way to keep women from careers, buying a home without your husbands OK, no bank loans and no credit card without your husband. I lived through that period it was a horror time for women. Ruth Ginsberg knows, she had to work as a secretary in spite of having a law degree.

(46,585 posts)Its an open secret in Albany that Cuomo is committed to maintaining Republican control of the state senate, where creative redistricting deliberately gives the upstate GOP minority an advantage. The governor could have used his veto power over districting maps in 2012, or used some of his vast campaign resources to elect a stronger Democratic majority in the upper chamber. Instead he has carefully maintained this structural barrier to the passage of progressive bills.
But gerrymandering alone isnt enough to give the Republicans effective power over Albanys agenda. For that, we can thank the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), a group of eight Democratic senators who broke away from the Democratic caucus to forge a power-sharing agreement with Republicans. In 2012, after Democrats claimed a slim majority in the upper house, four of those Democrats Jeffery Klein, Diane Savino, David Valesky, and David Carlucci agreed to caucus with the Republicans, giving the GOP the majority. Since then, the IDC has doubled in size and remained loyal to the Republicans.
This arrangement benefits all the key political players above all, Cuomo and his presidential ambitions.
Senate Republicans can control redistricting and enjoy the perks and resources of majority status, including the ability to control New York states over $150 billion budget. IDC members get pork for their districts, stipends for chairing committees, bigger budgets, expanded staff and access to big centrist Democratic donors (such as charter schools, real estate interests, and hedge funds). Cuomo continues to cut spending and prevent tax increases (particularly on high incomes and property taxes) to appease donors, and casts himself as a moderate progressive who gets things done. Meanwhile, Democrats in the Assembly and Senate can take strong left-liberal positions on a number of social-democratic bills, like single payer, knowing full well that the Senate majority leader will never allow it the leave committee for a floor vote.
The Assembly blames the Senate. Democratic senators blame the IDC. The IDC blames the Democrats and the Republicans. And Cuomo is spared the need to veto popular social-democratic bills like single payer, which would tarnish his image with Democratic primary voters. This carefully choreographed blame game stymies all attempts by progressive activists to pass reforms. Meanwhile, millions of New Yorkers, including women, people of color, school children, low-income families, and the uninsured and under-insured suffer under Trumps policies.

(5,790 posts)But I support states like New York, California, Hawaii, and others where there is strong pro-choice support to preserve it now. They also need to preserve Plan B being available OTC without a prescription, and should consider offering The Pill on the same basis.
I suspect immediately after the overturn the Congress (if it is still GOP controlled) will move to make crossing a state line to obtain an abortion a crime.
Now tell them to fix the double jeopardy issue with state and federal laws.
