Voters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties passed a .2 millage Tuesday in support of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
The millage won by less than 1,500 votes in Macomb County. It won by a large margin in both Wayne and Oakland counties.
The tax increase will cost the average homeowner about $15 a year. Before going on the ballot, the DIA had made cuts but still faced a big deficit.

This is a cultural gem and one of the best art museums in the USA. Due to this vote, all residents of the three Metro Detroit areas will have unlimited free access. A great win for a revitalizing Detroit! Suck it Teabaggers.

(1,203 posts)My best friend does volunteer work at the DIA and he filled me in on this. So glad to see this went thru, the DIA needs to stay opening and functioning in Detroit.

(5,756 posts)It's nice to see some people value an art institute in their area. At an estimated average of $15 a year per home I think it is a wise investment. Heck, I pay more than $15 to get into most art institutes and museums when I'm out trying to see some culture.

(552 posts)It not only shows people are willing to increase taxes for the right causes, but it also allows all of the tri-county residents to have free access. We need to expand the arts for all to enjoy. I am proud of our Detroit area!
