Low-quality, extremist, sensationalist and conspiratorial news published in the US was overwhelmingly consumed and shared by rightwing social network users, according to a new study from the University of Oxford.

The study, from the university’s “computational propaganda project”, looked at the most significant sources of “junk news” shared in the three months leading up to Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address this January, and tried to find out who was sharing them and why.

“On Twitter, a network of Trump supporters consumes the largest volume of junk news, and junk news is the largest proportion of news links they share,” the researchers concluded. On Facebook, the skew was even greater. There, “extreme hard right pages – distinct from Republican pages – share more junk news than all the other audiences put together.”

The research involved monitoring a core group of around 13,500 politically-active US Twitter users, and a separate group of 48,000 public Facebook pages, to find the external websites that they were sharing.

Users who shared similar collections of links were grouped together depending on what they were discussing: on Twitter, some identified cohorts included “Conservative Media”, “Trump Supporters” (a distinct group from “Republican Party”) and “Resistance”; on Facebook, those audience groups included “Hard Conservative”, “Women’s Rights” and “Military/Guns”.

I can't tell you how many times I was outside a hotel smoking during Obama's "reign" when some blue collar douchebag told me my President should be shot. Usually because he was forcing them to buy insurance. The fucking tyranny! My response was usually, "what the fuck is wrong witchoo?" Which led to conversations I didn't want to have. I never learned. I fell for it every time.

But, here I am on one of the most liberal msg boards on the internet and I've yet to see anyone calling for this assholes assassination.

What is astounding is so many of Trumps deplorables will believe this as it circulates FB and Twitter. A tiny fraction may see this expose, most will not. They will be able to confirm their worst fears about those angry violent liberals, even though liberals historically are fundamentally against gun violence, and even gun ownership to a large degree. Here I thought we were the lily-livered bleeding hearts that can't hurt a fly, or a tree. Its not even logical but they will swallow it down. And that last line is truly a deplorable accusation.

Yet its scary how many of these brainwashed Trumpiteers will just lap it up like rain drops on their tongues after a drought. They feed on this stuff. They are told to hate liberals because they are bad. But its tough finding any 'bad' things to harp on about so they simply invent the most vile crimes they can and pretend they are facts.

One of the methods that the GOP use and have used for a long time is not only accusing the other side for what they have been caught doing, but now they have moved on to accusing the other side of doing what they are PLANNING to do. Like rig an election. So that when or if they get caught, they can reverse flip it around to say.."why didn't they say anything about it then?, We were the only ones talking about it"

Now they have to try and denigrade Democrats by topping whatever their own worst examples of human waste is as represented by Republicanism, like Roy Moore and the long list of mostly Republican sexual abusers and pedofiles, including the POTUS himself. Just to come out as 'winners'. Its truly pathetic, sick and deranged.
