Kaine, Gardner, Reed, McCain Introduce Bill To Prevent The President From Leaving NATO
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Jack Reed (D-RI), and John McCain (R-AZ) introduced a bipartisan bill to explicitly prohibit the President of the United States from withdrawing from NATO without Senate approval. The bill requires the President to seek the advice and consent of the Senate to modify or terminate U.S. membership in NATO and formalizes the Senate's opposition to withdrawing from the treaty. If the President attempts to withdraw from Continue Reading

(11,744 posts)I can see why they are doing it. Trump cares nothing for the rule of law. However isn't it already in the constitution that the Senate ratifies and has final say on treaties?

(102,357 posts)pushed for Gardner (he'd clearly been watching at least some and too much Fox). He even fell for Gardner's protestations that he was not rabidly anti-choice. It broke my heart as we never really got past that disagreement and he died about 18 months later. He was a really great guy otherwise.
One of those political rifts that will never heal, sadly.

(3,335 posts)I wish him the best of health. There is a reason that God has kept him around holding on this long. Maybe his purpose is to keep Trump at bay as long as he can. Best Wishes and continued good health to you, John McCain.

(6,831 posts)John McCain is dying of cancer as I write this. He could have taken his diagnosis and retired to whatever time he has left to live in peace and solitude, away from the theatrics of the Senate and the near-hysterical mania of what has become of the republican party. Instead, he chose to remain at the helm, doing what he can to keep this russian-compromised gas-bag from destroying our alliances and demolishing our democracy.
And I, for one, appreciate the effort.

(51,697 posts)Honestly, if you need to pass laws like that, it is time to just remove the president. You wouldn't need all these protective laws if we didn't have a traitor in the White House.

These all got there because of stupid law suits. They show a sad history of how our "justice" system works.
Now history will be recording all the guidelines placed on future presidents because of the gutless wimps in GOP leadership.

(43,282 posts)Trump will double down, cut funding, tweet, issue executive orders ... this bill won't stop him. I don't think Presidents already have the ability to abrogate treaties. And if they have to pass one about NATO, it sort of implies other treaties are vulnerable.
