I come from a similar situation and kids just get broken. And I think a lot of them stay broken all their lives.

But he had advantages a lot of poor kids in the same sort of abusive homes didn't have and could have used to make a break.

Money does not solve all problems but it can provide chances and opportunities.

I worked with kids who could have had very different lives with just a little money.

A kid lives with constant fear and vigilance when her mom can never pay rent on time. Even when I'm doing ok in my heart I'm in survival mode. To accept that it may always be that way helps.

With the children of male narcissists the daughter is the Golden Child. With mothers the sons are the Golden Children. Narcissists pretty much destroy their children.

First the child has to figure out something is really wrong with the emotional abuse they deal with constantly. Then they have to learn to set boundaries. Then they have to separate themselves from the situation and learn how to have healthy relationships.

It is a hard haul. Narcissists project everything they hate about themselves onto their scapegoat children. Then they hate the children. It really does a huge amount of damage when you have a parent that hates you.

It is an awful situation but it is still not an excuse for being a horrible person.
