Coke is raising prices, and it's citing Trump's tariffs

oke drinkers are likely to see prices for their favorite drinks rise this year, thanks in part to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, the company’s CEO said.

Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey told the Wall Street Journal this week that his company is taking the unusual step of raising prices of Coke, Diet Coke and the company’s other favorites in the middle of the year in response to rising costs.

He cited steel and aluminum tariffs announced by Trump earlier this year as one of the causes of increased costs.

“There is some broad-based push on input costs that have kind of come in and affected ours and many other industries as well,” Quincey told the Journal.

Quincey said during a CNBC interview that rising costs, including freight, metal and labor, led to the need for higher drink prices.

I think that stuff has no value unless it is heavily diluted with alcohol of some sort.

Purists of any sort turn me off. I don't make a habit of drinking soda pop, but I occasionally drink it and have no hesitancy in saying that.

I take the bottle home for reclaim. Sometimes my days can be fast paced, I eat lunch really fast and the soda help burp me so that I don't have issues later. I don't drink anything but water at home.

I posted about it more than a month ago. We stock our machines at work so we buy directly from the Coke and Pepsi distributors. Pepsi's letter specifically cited tariffs as one of the reasons.

My son works in a discount grocery store. He sees people every day coming there to load up their carts with nothing but cases and cases of soda pop.

Soda provides cheap calories for poor people. I was born and raised poor, some of the stuff I eat and drinker then make me cringe now, but it kept us alive and I grew up reasonably healthy.

How much of a difference could this make? A can is only a very small amount of aluminum, and not all pop comes in aluminum cans anyway.

BUT, the difference is down in the weeds, if it hurts a company, that company has much, much larger problems with profitability.

One of our breweries cited tariffs. The top of the can is made in Canada.

The dumb ass will be pissed off at any any every America drink manufacturers for making him look bad. Eisenhower was definitely right when he said there is no limit . . . to how stupid people can get.

But also I started to realize, they are 95% water and are filled with various chemicals whose names I couldn't pronounce.

obviously, many people don't drink soft drinks in cans, bottles, or at restaurants and that's fine. There are many of us who do and yes, they're filled with all kinds of ridiculous ingredients: you wanna know why orange or grapefruit soda tastes so good to those of us who like it? It's the Glycerated ester of wood rosin, OK?

But those of us who do drink it enjoy it, and it is one of life's pleasures for those of us who do, so this business people have of vilifying those who do drink it, or eat fast food occasionally, or don't eat veggie/vegan should really cease. Personal preferences within legal limits are just that, and I for one am not going to sit here idly by while someone states that if I drink Coke, I must be allied with evil forces in nature and politics.

In other words, Jesus H. Kerist, let me just drink my frigging soda, all right?
