Recep Tayyip Erdogan denied Sunday that Turkey had agreed to free a detained American pastor as part of a possible deal with the US and Israel, and warned that Turkey would not be bullied into releasing him by US President Donald Trump.
The Turkish President's comments come after a senior US official told CNN last week that Erdogan and Trump had agreed to a deal that would see Israel release an imprisoned Turkish national in exchange for Turkey freeing Andrew Brunson, who has been held in Turkey since October 2016.
The Turkish national, Ebru Ozkan, was allowed to leave Israel for Turkey in mid-July. Brunson, meanwhile, was released into house arrest on Wednesday but has not been permitted to leave Turkey.
On Thursday, Trump threatened Turkey with retaliation, tweeting: "The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being. He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!"

I hope Turkey releases pastor Brunson but I'm not surprised Trump gets chumped again.

(10,749 posts)Trump claims credit for everything. Releasing pastors. The economy. North Korea nukes. Trade war. EU buying soybeans.
Of course, all of these so-called agreements take place behind closed doors, without anybody to verify anything, and nothing in writing. No agreements. No memorandums of understanding. No treaties.
Next step, everybody he claims agreed to stuff goes public and says no they didnt. No freed pastors. No North Korean denuclearization. No soybean buying spree. Etc.
The buffoon-in-chief then says everybody has gone back on their word and cant be trusted. Or
Eventually something happens, for reasons totally unrelated to trump, and Maybe a pastor is freed. Maybe the remains of American soldiers are returned. Maybe some members of the EU start buying soybeans. It is probably totally unrelated to anything that was agreed upon, but guess who takes credit?
Another post I just saw said that the Fed wants to raise interest rates. Trump is opposed to that and has demanded that they dont. Time will pass, economic conditions may change, and the Fed decides to keep interest rates where they are or raise them buy a smaller amount than was originally intended. Guess who takes credit?
This, among other things, Is why we are all so fucking exhausted.
