Melania Trump gardened at the White House once last September, and the pictures resurfaced today, thanks to the tireless investigative journalism of serial tweeter Chrissy Teigen, among others. (Teigen has asked media outlets to refrain from covering her every online move in the past, but she makes it hard when she consistently proves such an able assignment editor!)
these look exactly like my workout soles. because i work out as much as this chick gardens pic.twitter.com/s2mwLKRK7b

But back to Melania and this remarkable picture:
?width=380&height=570&rect=2000x3000&offset=417x0
Melanias gardening pose suggests something between a head cheerleader half-assing her way through choreography she doesnt feel like performing full-out and a spooked house pet who has never been in a garden before and is unsure how to comport herself in these environs. She apparently went with trying to get low to the ground, but she doesnt actually want any part of her to touch dirt, so she settles on a stance something like yogas Utkatasana, or chair pose: knees bent, hips back, core activated. This keeps her on alert, ready to strike should something she does not want to encounter, such as a child separated from his parents, or her husband, appear suddenly out of the bushes. She doesnt bother to put up her hair or exchange her designer sunglasses for a more practical wide-brimmed hat. In one hand, she holds a pair of pruning shears uneasily, as if ready not to trim an overgrowth but to snip off the ponytail of an invisible rival or a Barbie doll she is jealous of. Her other hand poses beatifically over an empty basket, providing gestural encouragement to the basket without actually deigning to make physical contact with it. She really doesnt prune, do u?
Clothing-wise, Teigens commentary focused on Trumps shoes, and since we more often see her in stilettos, its easy to see why. Melanias feet, trained on years of uncomfortable spikes, seem unaccustomed to such flat shoes. Maybe thats whats throwing her center of gravity off? But the shoes are hardly the only notable element of the first ladys ensemble. Her plaid top, complete with four buttons on the cuff, is from Balmain and retails for $1,380. Her gloves, in bright red and closely tailored to her fingers, also seem more fit for attending galas than gardening. In other words, these pictures confirm everything we already thought about Melania Trump.
Contrast them, meanwhile, to some of former first lady Michelle Obama gardening elsewhere and working in the same garden, which she started during her husbands term, and weep. Once again, Michelle has been plagiarized, and once again, its been done very badly.
snip - read at the link to get some pics of a true gardener - and wonderful human being.

(58,785 posts)that the soles have disintegrated off of. Love them. If I venture farther away it's tall muck boots for protection. Our California house was surrounded by a small and very civilized barefoot garden. Not in Georgia. Both pair sit by the kitchen door.
It's the thought of a $1380 plaid shirt, though, that made me laugh and glad I opened the OP.

(9,989 posts)One of the many particles in the losing streak is this freshman dorm bon` mot - "How hard can this be?"
One of the great things about my favorite sport ( racing ) is that it hits that right back into your mouth at 3 am. The taste of overheated gear oil is a great leveler.
And where did those freshman dweebs end up? Taking that same "look at the brains on us!" mentality, too cool to look it up attitude, and eternal uselessness into politics. Or business, where they're always related to the boss.
Somebody did'nt know how to even TRY to get it right. Never looked up Martha Stewart gardening pictures? Pitiful effort, truly.

(14,887 posts)trim with those by-pass pruners (which have also never been used)? The broccoli, in front of her, are young and just recently transplanted. There are artichokes in the bed behind her but they have all been harvested (see the empty stalk). There are blurred green tomatoes in the background. But you can see the plant itself is brown. I'm guessing this picture was taken in the fall. That is when you get developed tomatoes and newly planted broccoli growing at the same time.
The bed to her right is primarily an herb garden. Those gloves have never touched soil either. The only time gloves and pruners are that clean is when you take them out of their packaging.
I always wore my crocs in the garden because I could hose them off.

We sold that exact type of basket at a yard sale a few weeks ago. Not meant for outside use.

(50,282 posts)I looked nothing like that when I was done. By the way, the sterile-looking tool in her hand is usually used for trimming small branches on bushes. You use scissors to cut herbs and veg. Funny, too, her spotless basket is in front of what appear to be young broccoli seedlings. The only difference between this photo and the one posed on the airplane wing with the gun is the amount of clothing being worn. LOL.
