We can't shrug off Trump's attacks on the press. Ever. They're undemocratic and invite, even incite, violence. This bears repeating. It demands repeating. Last night @CNN's @Acosta faced down a hostile crowd. Support from his colleagues, competitors, and general public is a must.

(9,897 posts)The TRUE enemy of the people are those who attack the press and attempt to subjugate them through veiled or even overt threats and violence. There are reporters executed and killed in places like the Philippines and Russia and North Korea (where summary executions are the norm for the merest hint of disagreement with the party line) - not coincidentally ruled by strong men that Trump is infatuated with because he believes that should be him in America.
The lies that are spun out of control by Fox News, projecting their own hideous torture of the truth by accusing other networks of actually being the ones to blame or "even worse than" themselves, are more corrosive to the national discourse than anything since the days of Jim Crow laws and the Civil Rights era debates of the 1960's...now, 50 years later, we get another caustic moment in American history, only this time it is led overtly from the Oval Office and is turning the Daily Press briefings into something more akin to Pravda than American journalists are willing (outside of attention whores and money grubbing freaks like Hannity and his Fox News imitators and co-conspirators).
Fuck Trump.
Fuck Fox.
Fuck SHS and her bullshit "feel-sorry-for-me-too" BS
Fuck Hannity and everything that he even remotes likes.
Anyone that supports this current nonsense coming out of the White House is guilty as abetting the first asshole who kills a journalist in a fury over QAnon or some other fever swamp nonsense made even the tiniest bit plausible by fuckers like SHS and her ilk.

(82,849 posts)Does Acosta get support from his media colleagues, or not? Do the American people stand up for a free, independent press? If Acosta is left to twist alone in the wind, the damage will be incalculable. The Trump administration is dodging the press and conducting an unprecedented amount of business away from the public eye.

(10,049 posts)It might have sent a strong message if all the journalists in the room had just walked out with Accosta. I know they have to report information from the WH, but most of these press conferences are simply an opportunity for Sarah Sanders to lie. There is no real news revealed there.

(58,724 posts)Seems to have been lost in all of this how extensive the attack is ongoing against the elections.

(9,670 posts)This isn't even a partisan issue. I would daresay that most conservative Americans do not even remotely consider the press to be the enemy of the people. This segment of our society has been so thoroughly inculcated in propaganda disguised as party loyalty that they are themselves, in fact, the enemy of the state.
How do 300 million Americans make the case that Jim Acosta, et al., regardless of their politics, are a vital and fundamental element of our democracy?

This doesn't mean that we can't discuss how to resolve this issue (emails, DU, other forums not infiltrated by "them".)
I have a twitter account but rarely use it. Especially since it seems that many of the posts are artificial/alt-facts. I'm not sure the free-for-all nature of twitter is a way to avoid bots/enemies barging in and taking control through volume.
Unfortunately, I now feel that moderated discussion boards are necessary. Can I trust the moderators? Probably a whole hell of a lot more than I trust dump, his paid-for lynch mob, plutocrats/oligarchs, or the kremlin.

(22,156 posts)raving about how horrible the media is and so forth is stupid and doesn't accomplish a thing...we've all lived w/ media day in and day out, so we are used to it.
rump is mad at the media because they are portraying him as a bumbling mess who doesn't know his a hole from a hole in the ground. rump deserves every negative bit of news because rump caused it, every little bit...

(4,642 posts)the Networks, including CNN, gave tRump 90% more airtime than any other candidate because they knew what kind of circus he would be and circuses are great for their bottom line. I'm sure their CEO's are dancing for joy about all the viewers this mess is bringing them. They don't give a rats ass about anyone's safety.

(81,421 posts)I havent been part of that scene for years, but I take that menacing of Jim Acosta and, during the campaign, of Katy Tur, quite personally.
I never faced that when I was a field reporter. Thank God!

(7,637 posts)They want to have it both ways. Outraged by Trump insane behavior and rightly so, but at the same time still enabling him but taking it on the chin and letting this administration abuse them. They could start by not covering any Trump rally, not inviting any Trump appointee on TV , not show up at the white house briefings since they are devoid of information and just consist of sarah sanders insulting them and spewing nonsense.
Trump is obsessing with TV ratings. If they deny him that he will be finished.

(14,175 posts)I'm waiting for Acosta to also say "for too many years we in the MSM News have adhered to the policy of false equivalency and in our fear of losing viewers of one side or the other, and have created the false impression that both parties are equally right and equally wrong on every issue.
We have been a great enabler of shrugging off every step downwards towards fascism that the GOP has taken by insisting to viewers that Democrats have the same degree of corruption and scandal. And conversely, that the GOP is equally benign and patriotic"
