Maryland Republican Gov. Hogan doesn't rule out 2020 presidential run

By POLITICO STAFF 08/03/2018 07:34 AM EDT

Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan on Thursday refused to rule out a potential presidential run in 2020, telling an audience that “you never say never.”

But the popular governor also sought to downplay any serious talk of jumping into the fray.

“I have never really given that much thought. Right now, I’m a lot more focused on just getting reelected because there’s a lot more things to get done in the second four years,” he told a group of business leaders in Montgomery County, Maryland, according to the Washington Post.

Hogan, who is running for reelection this fall, has in the past criticized President Donald Trump and Republicans in general, casting himself as a moderate amid an increasingly polarized nationwide political climate.

The Maryland governor joins a small cadre of Republicans, including Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who have also refused to rule out a possible 2020 presidential run.
