Carl Bernstein: 'What We Are Watching in the Trump Presidency Is Worse Than Watergate'

Veteran reporter Carl Bernstein told Wolf Blitzer on Thursday that what’s happening with the Trump administration right now is actually worse than Watergate.

At least Nixon, he said, didn’t “publicly act unhinged.”

“In Watergate, the system worked,” Bernstein explained. “The President of the United States did not publicly declare the press an enemy of the people and seek to undermine the First Amendment and the very legitimacy of what the press did, though he did try to make our conduct an issue… in Watergate rather than his own conduct.”

And then he said things are worse now:

“What we are watching in the Trump presidency is worse than Watergate. It’s worth than Watergate, as I say, because the system worked in Watergate. The heroes in Watergate were Republicans who demanded that the president be held accountable, who demanded that he be transparent, who demanded to know what did the president know and when did he know it, and who conducted bipartisan investigation that led, in fact, to understanding and finding out what Nixon had done, whereas the Republicans on Capitol Hill thus far have done almost everything they can to impede and undermine legitimate investigation. So it’s a totally different and much more dangerous situation.”

This time around we have a treasonous president who is aiding a foreign enemy in attacking our election. He is a Russian agent.

Nixon was none of these things. He was also crazy, but not nearly as crazy as the Fucking Moron. Also this time we have a GOP Congress and Senate who is aiding him I stead of checking him. THIS IS THE BIG DIFFERENCE and somewhat unexpected by most people when he was inaugurated. Nixon was not personally in huge personal debt to the foreign enemy either. Yes, Watergate is kids' stuff compared to Russiagate.

senators are retiring and leaving, and not doing anything about the mess they are leaving behind...they helped make this mess. They need to forget party, and remember country first, and step up to the plate...

recently graduated from college. Watergate was like the White House's annual Childrens' Easter Egg Roll compared to the Trump/Complicit Republican firestorm we are currently living through. There are many similarities and many complex differences but one of the main differences is that Watergate was domestic in nature whereas the Trump cataclysm is full of disturbing international elements. This is WAY worse!
