I have no idea what the Republicans in congress are thinking, what they are doing. Mueller is going to bring forth severe charges. The Republicans can either impeach, ask Trump to resign or protect a proven criminal. They have put themselves in a no win situation.

If they protect Trump after Mueller proves Trump is guilty they will be committing suicide.
