OpEd / August 6, 2018
The biggest threat to our democracy that nobody is talking about is the real possibility of a rogue Constitutional convention empowering extremists to radically reshape the Constitution, our laws, and our country.
If just a few more states sign on to whats called an Article V convention for a balanced budget amendment, theres no limit to the damage they might do.
Amendments proposed by an Article V convention are supposed to be ratified by 38 states. But convention delegates could hijack the process and change the ratification process itself, tossing out the 38 state requirement.
An Article V convention would allow delegates to write their own agenda into our Constitution.

Possible agendas might include (or reverse) ...?
A balanced budget amendment
A womans right to choose.
Marriage equality.
First Amendment protections for free speech and a free press.
Equal protection of the laws.
Checks and balances.

National politics are important and fascinating, but what happens at a state and local level is critical to the future for all of us.

IF we get a constitutional convention, this shit will become actual law - and it will literally take armed and violent rebellion to change it ...
The sickness in this country is just mind bending.
We are not any "smarter" than anyone else, but all of this is so painfully obvious to us and 1/3 of the county simply does not give a shit and another 1/3 is fully on board with it.
Sigh ...

(4,545 posts)I've seen a lot af alarming posts (not here) about this, but no plan for how to prevent it. Some professor on Bill Mahr this week was ringing the alarm about this, but she didn't offer any ideas about what to do, either. She said something about 28 states having signed up for it, and only "a few more" were needed. OK. So, which 28 states? How likely are the remaining states to sign on to this? How many more do they need? And suppose they get "enough" states, what is the remedy? I'm not asking any of you to answer my questions. I'm just tossing them out there because they keep running through my mind.

(24,709 posts)not having the Dark Money interest and the Koch's and billionaires dictate the terms, just like there Tory forefathers had back in the day, make a king rich and his underlings get quid pro quo, and had no services sorta of speaks but taxes going to the wealthy, just think, if the billionaires get to rewrite the Constitution in there imagine and they take everything ..................if we lose anymore in the mid terms, well they just need that magic number of 7......................enjoy......................this article

(4,356 posts)I believe they need 2/3'rds or more of the states to call for a constitutional convention. That would mean 34 states or more need to sign on.
We need to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. Help in any way you can. Phone banks, door-to-door, mailings, registering voters, donating if you can or driving people to the polling place on election day. There are so many things each of us can do that when multiplied will translate in victory on election night. I'll be working a precinct door-to-door until election day. Been doing it for years.

(988 posts)If we do not get out and vote (which they on the right are counting on) then we will lose what we consider our freedoms.
A Balanced Budge Amendment in itself if not bad. We should all have balanced budgets even in our personal life.
But its the other things they would push that could be much worse.
WE must start capturing State legislatures. Fix the rules to prevent gerrymandering. They only want their votes to count and they will screw you in the back to get this done. This isnt a political game but a maneuver to take back the country from their perspective.
They are flat out scared that White people will not be the majority race in 20-30 years even though it will still be the largest race.

Running a government is not at all the same as personal budgets.
This is a mistake and or fake claim made by the right, not that you are quoting the right, but I am just saying...

(21,675 posts)is really a poison pill. In order to get a balanced budget, the safety nets would inevitably fall. Professor (Nancy) McLean, one of Bill Maher's guests last Friday, was correct and was very serious about this issue. If you haven't before, check it out.

(10,434 posts)that ALL they ever do is cut cut cut. Starting with taxes. Then moving on to essential services.
Not once in the media, including Maher's show last Friday, is it told that the budget WOULD be balanced, if corporations and billionaires paid taxes like working people do.

(36,487 posts)Congress must act on this call if at least two-thirds of the states (34 states) make the request. The convention would then propose constitutional amendments. Under the Constitution, such amendments would take effect if ratified by at least 38 states. Jan 18, 2017
I'm not sure they can get enough states to ratify anything. The article above has some points on why a convention might be a bad idea for those who want it.

(41,158 posts)We don't only need to take lots of congressional seats this midterm election, we need lots of state house and senate chambers as well as governors. Critically important to save our constitutional rights. The fight for the Democratic form of government never ended with the revolutionary war. It is and always has been a continuous struggle. Work like heck to GOTV this critically important election year.

(10,476 posts)That is a part of the Constitution, which woulds require an Amendment to change. An Article V Convention itself can't just change the Constitution without...surprise...going by the thresholds that are currently in place.
What a dumb, fear-mongering article.

(86,690 posts)which implies, to me, that what Bill Mahr said about this whole global conspiracy being about race is probably correct.
All the people with all the money in the world are scared of the rest of us and planning to enslave us all, apartheid style. I am looking for holes in this concept and I'm only connecting more dots instead. I have suspected that something of this sort was coming but I couldn't piece it all together. I don't think we have to ask too many more questions with the word "why" in them anymore, we need to ask ourselves "how" we are going to correct this situation that threatens everyone on the planet in a detrimental way.
