The "favorite" in a state primary isn't entitled to a coronoation.

Some people seem to be confused about the purpose of a primary: It is giving people the chance to elect the person they feel like best represents them. That implies that races are sometimes tight and heated.

The purpose of a primary is not to have the media, pollsters and party leadership to pick a "strongest candidate" in advance and then for everyone else to get out of the way so that this person doesn't get "damaged" by having to actually earn the nomination.

3. There are times, however, when it's best if "damage" is kept to minimum. I can think of an example.

As it turns out in that example, the person who could best represent the people was damaged enough to contribute to the election of a tyrant.
