The crisis over global warming warrants an unparalleled responseMATTHEW ROZSA AUGUST 5, 2018 11:30PM (UTC)
Global warming has made the news for a number of reasons this week: The Supreme Court rejected a request by President Donald Trump to halt a lawsuit by children and teenagers to force the federal government to address man-made climate change; Trump's Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation took new steps to reverse President Barack Obama's rules requiring car manufacturers to steadily reduce greenhouse gas pollution from their vehicles; former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger denounced those same Trump policies as "stupid"; and The New York Times ran a brilliant piece documenting how, between 1979 and 1989, the world had the opportunity to effectively address man-made climate change... and squandered it.
Yet this is one of those issues in which because there are so many twists and turns and overwhelming details it is easy to lose sight of a crucial fact: If we do not resolve the problem of man-made climate change, it could quite literally spell the end of human civilization.

(1,660 posts)All 7.6 billion of us. Politics is not a major factor, just population and consumption. We've been screwed sine the 1930s.
Apologies for the dystopian outlook...

All the billionaires will rocket off to Mars and live in a luxury hole in the ground while the rest of humanity burns up or gets flooded out and starves to death.
Brave new world indeed.

Hurts like hell to know they have, all things considered, 2-3 decades more than I do to watch the planet die.
Even if we instantly halted all the negative factors tomorrow, nobody is even talking about the effects of Fukishima blowing in the wind for the next decade or or longer.

And I worry that my brother and sister's grandchildren, if they have any, will live to see the end of the human species, or at the very least the horrible precursors to the end.

(10,500 posts)I think the point where the whole world needed to get together and come up with a big plan was 30 years ago, in 1988, when James Hansen delivered his famous testimony to Congress. That was the point where any doubt that climate change existed, or was extremely dangerous, should have come to an end, even among the skeptical.
The issue did come up in the debate between Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen. And in every series of debates through 2008. But in the last two elections there was not one question about it. Hillary did call Trump out on calling climate change a Chinese Hoax, which of course he lied about. But that was it.

(20,001 posts)WITH ENFORCEMENT POWER to regulate, monitor, and punish violators. It's obviously a global problem suggesting the need for a global solution. Currently conscientious countries with resources may act responsibly but there may be many other countries that don't have the resources or the will to do what's necessary. As much as Republicans love their fossil fuels and hate international bodies like the U.N., a global body with real enforcement power probably won't happen.

McCain once called it a gas station masquerading as a country. Does anybody think they are ever going to get very serious about doing what's needed?
So in answer to your question...I'm going with "the planet."
ETA: Some Republicans may be dumb enough to believe that if they can make enough money (from fossil fuels, etc.) they'll just buy a safe place in a gentrified area not threatened by climate change.

(60,010 posts)Big money is being spent in out of the way places in New Zealand where the rich are buying hold fasts that are accessible by air only..small planes.
and other places on the globe...islands, etc.
And a few hundred are buying space on "floating worlds" that are actually cruising around now, more planned.
One thing about being stinking wealthy....there are sellers of things the rich want to spend their money on, who have no qualms about charging what the traffic will bear.

(2,533 posts)As I'm pretty sure there is no way to solve this. We are acting like parasites. We've been very successful to the point our "host" is suffering. Luckily she will shrug us off and a new species will become dominant.
I have children and I'm hoping I'm wrong. But our genius is flawed by character that strives for dominance. And in abhorrent forms it has proven dangerous but never so much as now. our willful ignorance has led us here. The rich think they can ride this out. They will just get to suffer longer IMHO.
What we have done to nature / animals is the biggest sin if you believe ins such things or not-it is a abomination on a delicate balance that held almost unlimited beauty and abundance.
If we do want to evolve we have to learn we can't "own" land or animals or any of natures gifts. They are to be used with care for the future of all not the chosen or rich.
Good luck with that.

(2,955 posts)This world simply isn't fit to hold more than a few billion of us. If it isn't climate changing doing us in, it will just be some other issue like resource scarcity/lack of water/other environmental degradation. Almost all of our environmental problems are due to this root issue. You think climate change would be an issue if the world only had 500 million people spread across it? You think things like drought, desertification, etc would be issues? No, we could basically live in luxury with more than plenty of resources for everyone indefinitely if we could sustain a population at that level. Not only that, but the value of each individual life would go up. Right now, life is cheap. We barely even feel bad anymore on news of hundreds/thousands dying in 3rd world countries. That's what happens when we've reached a point where LESS IS MORE in regard to the human population. More humans is no longer a good thing for the world.
IMO we've reached a so called 'great filter' at this point. It's a test which will determine whether humans are worthy of continuing to advance and eventually exploring out from our planet, or whether we'll crowd ourselves out and fall into decay like a population of rats in a cage. Passing this test will require us to do one of the hardest things our species has ever been faced with, which is to go AGAINST our core reproductive instincts. No other species has ever been faced with this dilemma. Suddenly following our most basic urge to reproduce has become a bad thing which directly threatens the continuation of our civilization. We also need to figure out how to keep the economy going in a NEGATIVE growth society, which is another very complicated issue.
Personally I have no kids, nor do I really want them at this time, so I guess I have no stakes in the outcome of this game. Whether we pass this test or not is largely just a matter of intrigue to me. I'd like to see something encouraging for a change, but so far I see little which gives me hope for the future of humanity. The population just keeps going up and up, and organizations like the Catholic church STILL can't seem to get on board with contraception. On the bright side, I guess you could say that there's no greater privilege than to see the end of the world begin and possibly occur in your own lifespan. To know that you might be one of the most privileged generations in history, who lived with all the wonders of modern life, and yet lived before those same wonders critically damaged the world we live in. What a special time to be alive.

(2,807 posts)I've watched our growing season expand by 6-8 weeks here in West Virginia in the past 20 years. Our storms both winter and summer stronger than ever. I see and understand the relationship between CO2 and temperature, I see the levels of CO2 in the atmophere. Ive heard the smart guys and what they been saying. I also know that the wealthiest corporations, and people, in the history of this planet have a vested interest in, and have spent fortunes, lying and bullshitting the most gullible people on Earth convincing them what is happening isn't happening.
Just more of the same shit sandwich we get served everyday here in America by Republicans.
