As I've said since he took the GOP nomination: They Got Conned.

Scott Adams even discussed this on Bill Maher during the campaign. Trump uses "techniques of persuasion", like repetition: never referring to HRC except as "Crooked Hillary", which associated the word with her name EVEN IF YOU LIKE HER.

Trump, AM Hate Radio, and Fox News above all, have brainwashed these old white men, and old white women. It worked (and continues to work) on my Reagan-Democrat Dad, and he's not objectively less intelligent than I am. He's just less cultured, less well-read.
