F-15s were scrambled and people on Twitter were monitoring the control tower. He was suicidal. Flew it into the ground, I think on a little island.
Incredible. If you follow Twitter you can follow at #SeaTac

(3,344 posts)And there is a good bit of recorded audio that people have made available. Quite sad really.
Also the Sheriff's office is tweeting official info:

joshcryer
(62,276 posts)Nah, that guy knew he wasn't coming back. Taking off is the easy part. Especially with planes these days that are very automated and have in failsafes and checks to make sure everything goes smoothly. Landing is the tricky part.

(62,276 posts)I'm not saying anything about the dude as he clearly obviously snapped and wanted to go out in a bang. And I really don't think he meant anyone harm other than perhaps himself (though him saying he vomited all over the plane tells me he realized that he just killed himself as soon as he took off without knowing how to land).
Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)I can't imagine an airport safe enough for a guy in that mental state to attempt a landing
joshcryer
(62,276 posts)But he laughed it off and said they wouldn't want that.
He then basically said his plan was to nosedive it safely into the ground.
Which is what he did.

(24,376 posts)Size doesn't matter, as long as the airframe can take a 1G roll like that.
He was quoted as saying something to the effect, that it was a 1 G roll so the aircraft never knew it was upside down!

(7,725 posts)Such calmness in his voice. The whole event was a look inside a mans soul who's determined he can't take the status quo anymore. Compelling and sad. Didnt hurt anybody but the cheap ass airline he worked for for min wage. RIP Rich.

I can see Vashon Island clearly
From my bench at the Park there.
We heard the sirens begin at 8:15 or so
As car after car flew to the dock
Close by to take the ferry there.
If it would have hit ANY other Island it would
Have been a disaster. Right across is my town
I've lived in 45 years.
The air is thick with the smell of burning wood
And fuel.

(146,329 posts)Not really, and I'm not minimizing the seriousness of all this, but there does need to be some sort of external control interlock for starting commercial jets. If you had to have a confirmation code transmitted to the plane before doing the start-up sequence, it would be impossible to steal a plane like that.
nolabear
(41,991 posts)The expert (missed exact title) said it was a one off and he didnt expect changes to be made. The plane was in a cargo area and ACT did an amazing job protecting people once they realized what was going on, both on runways and in the air.

Just a normal average guy. Had a bad day, and it seems it got away from him. A cascade of bad choices unfortunately.
Life is cruel, often.
