NY-27: Ethics Board called Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw into question

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The Ethics Board in Erie County is posing tough questions for Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw, saying he broke their laws.

The controversy hangs on a business program Mychajliw attended at Harvard university. The price of the program was $12,000, and the Ethics Board says Mychajliw solicited favors that could have been seen as influencing his office.

Mychajliw says that's not true.

"Just like many elected officials before me, they attended Harvard - they had outside sources pay for that tuition," Mychajliw said. "I have zero authority over approving contracts in county government. And that's why the board was correct in their conclusion - that there was zero influence over me or my office."

The Ethics Board says now there are concerns about the audits his office conducts. The board's power is limited, it investigates a claim, makes a finding and finally sends a letter to the District Attorney.
