Officials say record numbers of absentee ballots filed ahead of Vermont primary
In South Burlington, city clerk Donna Kinville has been busy leading up to the Green Mountain State's primary election on Tuesday.
"The day before the primary is absolutely chaotic. We've probably (registered) about 100 people that have come in already today just to do absentee balloting. We're over 1,000 for this election already," she said.
She said that's a record number of absentee ballots the city's had for a primary.
It's a trend Secretary of State Jim Condos has seen across Vermont.
"When you compare this midterm election to the last midterm election, which was 2014, we've actually more than doubled the number of absentee early ballot requests," Condos said.
He said the reason for the increase in voter turnout is likely because of the number of seats up for election, like the highly contested Democratic gubernatorial race with environmentalist James Ehlers, transgender candidate Christine Hallquist, political newcomer Brenda Siegel and 14-year-old Ethan Sonneborn vying to win the party's nomination.
