(21,646 posts)For Simon and his partner Jack Kirby, who were both Jewish, there was a pervasive feeling of powerlessness reading dispatches in the New York newspapers about the persecution of Jews in Germany.
US neutrality in the war up to that point was also a source of frustration.
There was already a patriot-themed superhero splashing red, white and blue on the comic spinner racks: MLJs The Shield, who debuted late the previous year.
But in Hitler, Simon and Kirby found a real-life villain more insidious than anything their peers dreamed up for the panels of their books. They needed a hero who could provide them catharsis they werent getting in the real world.
Captain America #1 reportedly sold one million copies, a major success in the industry, after its release in December 1940.
And the character is still punching out evil-doers nearly 80 years later, with his latest comic book series penned by noted author Ta-Nehisi Coates arriving in time for the Fourth of July.

Ta-Nehisi Coates Is Black Panther writer . This was written earlier in 2018
over the years Cap has been more a symbol of a progressive America than any Rah-Rah patriotism.
I thought more folks would like this post, but the reaction seems to be "meh".

(5,914 posts)No way could you publish a storyline like that in mainstream comics today. They'd ship your ass to Guantanamo or render you into human trafficking like they do the kids at the border.

they do now with all the movies.
BTW, they never named Nixon, it was just obvious.

(5,914 posts)But comics were still pretty popular amongst the youth. I can't imagine that some Nixon supporter and "concerned parent" didn't completely lose their shit over that, even if it wasn't explicitly spelled out that they were referring to Nixon. I got the context even within those few panels.
You could not even insinuate that kind of thing in this day and age. I was actually shocked when you revealed this to me. And I don't shock easily.

we already knew Nixon was a corrupt crook, he was about to resign. He didn't have many defenders left.
BTW DC Comics recently parodied Trump in a book.

(5,914 posts)One of Cap's core traits is compassion. No actor could portray that quality accurately unless they felt that within themselves.
