By Michael Burke - 08/14/18 09:55 AM EDT
A former official from several Republican administrations said he believes President Trumps repeated attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller and the Russia investigation are a sign that Trump is worried the investigation is closing in on him.
Peter Wehner, who worked in President Reagans administration and both Bush administrations, said Monday on CNN that the stronger the case is that Mueller has, the more vitriolic, the more acrimonious, the more libelous Trump and his supporters will be in their attacks on the special counsel.
Its actually a sign of the strength of the case that Mueller is assessing and their fear of what hes going to reveal, Wehner said. If Robert Mueller didnt have anything, they would ignore him. But they know that hes got something. And they cant refute it on the facts, so they have to try and delegitimize him and the investigation.
Wehner added that he doesnt think Trumps attacks on Mueller will prove successful.
In the end, Robert Mueller is going to come forward with his report, he said. My suspicion is that its going to be a very powerful indictment thats going to demonstrate layers and layers of wrongdoing.
Trump has frequently lashed out at Mueller and his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Trump has called the investigation a witch hunt and earlier this month called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now.

(52,230 posts)1. what we all figured out here early on. he *acts* guilty as hell.
i think his p.r. effort is failing in large part because he does, in fact, act every bit like a very guilty person.
his incompetence is one of many reasons why he's a terrible president, but it's a damn good thing for the country that he's not more competent.

(56,828 posts)3. I'm also sure that Trump has been advised by his legal team
that many of his tweets can be used as evidence of abuse of power, witness tampering and/or obstruction of justice. Even low rent lawyers like Fruity Rudy G know that.
Trump must be figuring that once you get beyond 50 instances of obstruction, what are one, two or three more times?
