In the Boston area, Sam Adams beer is as ubiquitous as Patriots fans and dropped Rs. But Somervilles mayor wont be drinking it anytime soon.
Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone took issue with Boston Beer Co. founder Jim Koch heaping praise upon President Trump at a dinner in New Jersey last week, in which Koch said the Trump administrations tax cut plan will help his company compete with foreign breweries.
Now we have a level playing field, and were going to kick their ass, Koch told Trump at the Tuesday dinner, which featured a small gathering of business executives from around the country.
However, the progressive Curtatone didnt seem to like that. He tweeted on Sunday: I will never drink Sam Adams beer again!
Curtatone also tweeted that the complicit profiteers of Trumps white nationalist agenda need to be held accountable, and asked of Koch: While you were thanking Trump for your tax break, did you happen to express any concern for the families separated under his cruel and inhumane immigration enforcement policy?

(114 posts)I just spent a week in the Maritimes to attend the Stanfest. I hung with a group from Cape Breton who shared their meals and their beer when we pulled out the guitar and bass, and some of them were drinking - gasp - Coors Light. I did refer to it as 'republican beer'. Given a choice, I had my fill of Molson Canadian. I am just finishing up the 15 pack of Alpine I procured before returning home. I was surprised to see the locals sucking down the Coors and the Bud - especially given the trade situation today.

(49,387 posts)During the peak of the boycott years, Coors began sucking up to minorities with t.v. and magazine ads featuring famous black and Latino heroes.
Apart from that, and coming from from a purely anecdotal standpoint, Coors lost plenty of business from the Latino community.Years before, and during the boycott period, I worked in a heavily Latino populated area of L.A., and Coors was their beer of choice. Wedding receptions, confirmations, graduations etc., I would see cases of Coors stacked shoulder high on porches. No other beer. By the peak of the boycott "nada". Word of Coors racist policies undoubtedly got around to the Latino community.
This was way before Facebook, Twitter and DU.
CA Gov. Pete Wilson's Republicans found out the hard way, "Do not to mess with the Latino community". Prop. 187 boomeranged on the GOP, bigtime.

(27,811 posts)I'll stop now.
I do live in the Pacific Northwest and they used to have really good micro and craft beers, but I find that in the last ten years, it's so predominantly IPAs that I just gave up. I don't care for IPAs, and a bar with 20 rotating taps will often have at least a dozen IPAs. I think the beer makers out here have gotten lazy. I can usually only drink one, maybe two, before I feel so full that I can't take another sip, I don't know if it's too hoppy or too much carbonation, but I don't enjoy them.
I enjoyed the beers I had recently in Ireland, especially the fresh Guinness and a really good one we had called Galway Hooker (Hooker being a type of boat, as we found out!)
Anyway, that's an aside, I'll boycott Sam Adams till they come to their senses.
Aristus
(66,369 posts)Maybe they'll rachet it back a bit someday...
SeattleVet
(5,477 posts)At the last beer festival we went to here in Seattle there were a lot fewer IPAs and a much wider range of styles. Seems like the new trend is toward sours and a LOT of fruit infusions (I always hated the idea of fruit and other flavorings in my beers, but some of them are actually surprisingly quite tasty, and I've ben expanding my horizons).
Even among the IPAs there is now a much wider variety of substyles within the style - Northeast IPA (hazy, not so much 'hops in your face'); Session IPA (lower alcohol content, lighter flavor, great for summer); Cascadia Dark Ale (a sort of dark IPA-ish brew), and others that use various combinations of hops to give very distinct flavor profiles. One that is starting to take off in some regions is called 'brut IPA', and from the descriptions I've seen it seems interesting. An enzyme is added after fermentation to eliminate essentially all of the residual sugars, giving it a champagne-like quality.
At our brewery right now we have a Porter, Stout, Brown Ale, Wit, Amber, Session IPA along with our regular IPA and 2 with infusions (one with lavender, one with grapefruit), Peach Kettle Sour, and a few others. (I see that the taplist at https://www.flyingbike.coop/taplist/ is a little out of date; I'll be there tonight and will see if I can get someone to update it.)
Having said that, taprooms do have to put on tap what sells, and our current flagship IPA accounts for fully ⅓ of our total sales, across 16 taps, steadily for over a year.

(27,811 posts)I loved the original and long, long gone Thomas Kemper with its whiff of blueberry, but not a fan of the wits and most (not all) fruit beers. Reuben's has made some ryes that I like, and I tend to like bitter and to some extent lager.
My main beef is that they are so filling, I get uncomfortable after one or two.
This Flying Bike place is not too far from me; is it open to the public?

(5,477 posts)kids and dogs welcome, too! We don't serve food, but you can order from 2 places on the block at our bar and they'll deliver to the table, or you can bring your own food, or have anything else delivered.
It's the second fully licensed cop-op brewery in the US (first was in Austin), with about 1900 member/owners. A lot are home brewers, so we have a competition for different styles 3 or 4 times a year that the members get to taste and vote on. Whoever wins gets to work for a day with the brewer to scale up from a 5-gallon homebrew batch to a 7-Barrel brewery batch, and their recipe goes on tap.
Fun place; my wife and I joined before they opened (3 years ago this week!) and helped out in several work parties to build the place. It's become a sort of neighborhood 'front porch' or gathering place.
I'm in Maple Leaf, just a bit to the east of you. I'll put this on my "to-do".

(7,528 posts)The other two I like are Killian's Red and Blue Moon - I'll have to look up who they are brewed by.
{googles BLUE MOON}Originally called Bellyslide Belgian White, the beer was created by Keith Villa, a brewer at the Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field, Denver, Colorado (owned by the Molson Coors Brewing Company). Blue Moon brewed at the Molson Brewery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is sold in the USA, as well as exported to Europe.
George Killian's Irish Red: Premium Lager is a 5.4% abv amber lager brewed by Coors. The brand name was purchased only for sale in the North-American market by Coors from the Pelforth Brewery (Heineken France), who had previously bought it from Lett's Brewery in Ireland, which had closed in 1956.

(24,931 posts)Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump has named an official who had clashed with former Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and reportedly pushed for his ouster to lead a new commission focused on mental health at the department.
The VA announced on Tuesday that Jake Leinenkugel would lead the Creating Options for Veterans' Expedited Recovery Commission, which it said would examine the VA's "evidence-based therapy model for treating mental health conditions," as well as "integrated mental health approaches." The commission held its first meeting on Tuesday.
"Jake has been an ambassador for change at VA, working to implement President Trump's policies throughout the department over the past year and a half," acting VA Secretary Peter O'Rourke said in a statement. "As leader of this important new commission, Jake will continue to advocate for better care and services for his fellow Veterans."
