'I will never drink Sam Adams beer again!' Somerville's mayor fumes at founder's praise for Trump

In the Boston area, Sam Adams beer is as ubiquitous as Patriots fans and dropped Rs. But Somerville’s mayor won’t be drinking it anytime soon.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone took issue with Boston Beer Co. founder Jim Koch heaping praise upon President Trump at a dinner in New Jersey last week, in which Koch said the Trump administration’s tax cut plan will help his company compete with foreign breweries.

“Now we have a level playing field, and we’re going to kick their ass,” Koch told Trump at the Tuesday dinner, which featured a small gathering of business executives from around the country.

However, the progressive Curtatone didn’t seem to like that. He tweeted on Sunday: “I will never drink Sam Adam’s beer again!”

Curtatone also tweeted that the “complicit profiteers of Trump’s white nationalist agenda” need to be held accountable, and asked of Koch: “While you were thanking Trump for your tax break, did you happen to express any concern for the families separated under his cruel and inhumane immigration enforcement policy?”

I just spent a week in the Maritimes to attend the Stanfest. I hung with a group from Cape Breton who shared their meals and their beer when we pulled out the guitar and bass, and some of them were drinking - gasp - Coors Light. I did refer to it as 'republican beer'. Given a choice, I had my fill of Molson Canadian. I am just finishing up the 15 pack of Alpine I procured before returning home. I was surprised to see the locals sucking down the Coors and the Bud - especially given the trade situation today.

Anti Union, anti gay, anti Latino, anti black. It all came back to bite them in the ass.

In 1984 a decendent of founder, Adoph Coors, told a group of black businessmen how lucky they were that their ancestors were brought "in chains" from Africa to America. I couldn't believe any CEO would say that shit and still expect business as usual.

Tue Aug 14, 2018, 06:41 PM
Aug 2018

During the peak of the boycott years, Coors began sucking up to minorities with t.v. and magazine ads featuring famous black and Latino heroes.

Apart from that, and coming from from a purely anecdotal standpoint, Coors lost plenty of business from the Latino community.Years before, and during the boycott period, I worked in a heavily Latino populated area of L.A., and Coors was their beer of choice. Wedding receptions, confirmations, graduations etc., I would see cases of Coors stacked shoulder high on porches. No other beer. By the peak of the boycott "nada". Word of Coors racist policies undoubtedly got around to the Latino community.

This was way before Facebook, Twitter and DU.

CA Gov. Pete Wilson's Republicans found out the hard way, "Do not to mess with the Latino community". Prop. 187 boomeranged on the GOP, bigtime.

There are roughly half a million small craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest. The selection is so huge, I could drink a different one every day and not have to repeat a brew for years.

I'll stop now.

I do live in the Pacific Northwest and they used to have really good micro and craft beers, but I find that in the last ten years, it's so predominantly IPAs that I just gave up. I don't care for IPAs, and a bar with 20 rotating taps will often have at least a dozen IPAs. I think the beer makers out here have gotten lazy. I can usually only drink one, maybe two, before I feel so full that I can't take another sip, I don't know if it's too hoppy or too much carbonation, but I don't enjoy them.

I enjoyed the beers I had recently in Ireland, especially the fresh Guinness and a really good one we had called Galway Hooker (Hooker being a type of boat, as we found out!)

Anyway, that's an aside, I'll boycott Sam Adams till they come to their senses.

At the last beer festival we went to here in Seattle there were a lot fewer IPAs and a much wider range of styles. Seems like the new trend is toward sours and a LOT of fruit infusions (I always hated the idea of fruit and other flavorings in my beers, but some of them are actually surprisingly quite tasty, and I've ben expanding my horizons).

Even among the IPAs there is now a much wider variety of substyles within the style - Northeast IPA (hazy, not so much 'hops in your face'); Session IPA (lower alcohol content, lighter flavor, great for summer); Cascadia Dark Ale (a sort of dark IPA-ish brew), and others that use various combinations of hops to give very distinct flavor profiles. One that is starting to take off in some regions is called 'brut IPA', and from the descriptions I've seen it seems interesting. An enzyme is added after fermentation to eliminate essentially all of the residual sugars, giving it a champagne-like quality.

At our brewery right now we have a Porter, Stout, Brown Ale, Wit, Amber, Session IPA along with our regular IPA and 2 with infusions (one with lavender, one with grapefruit), Peach Kettle Sour, and a few others. (I see that the taplist at https://www.flyingbike.coop/taplist/ is a little out of date; I'll be there tonight and will see if I can get someone to update it.)

Having said that, taprooms do have to put on tap what sells, and our current flagship IPA accounts for fully ⅓ of our total sales, across 16 taps, steadily for over a year.

kids and dogs welcome, too! We don't serve food, but you can order from 2 places on the block at our bar and they'll deliver to the table, or you can bring your own food, or have anything else delivered.

It's the second fully licensed cop-op brewery in the US (first was in Austin), with about 1900 member/owners. A lot are home brewers, so we have a competition for different styles 3 or 4 times a year that the members get to taste and vote on. Whoever wins gets to work for a day with the brewer to scale up from a 5-gallon homebrew batch to a 7-Barrel brewery batch, and their recipe goes on tap.

Fun place; my wife and I joined before they opened (3 years ago this week!) and helped out in several work parties to build the place. It's become a sort of neighborhood 'front porch' or gathering place.

The other two I like are Killian's Red and Blue Moon - I'll have to look up who they are brewed by.

{googles BLUE MOON}Originally called Bellyslide Belgian White, the beer was created by Keith Villa, a brewer at the Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field, Denver, Colorado (owned by the Molson Coors Brewing Company). Blue Moon brewed at the Molson Brewery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is sold in the USA, as well as exported to Europe.

George Killian's Irish Red: Premium Lager is a 5.4% abv amber lager brewed by Coors. The brand name was purchased only for sale in the North-American market by Coors from the Pelforth Brewery (Heineken France), who had previously bought it from Lett's Brewery in Ireland, which had closed in 1956.

Stone pulled their sponsorship over what Fat Mike said and donated the money from the proceeds of their collaboration beer to a First Responders charity. It was pretty awesome to see:

I'll gladly drink Stone IPA over just about anything else!

Supporting anything Trump does is supporting EVERYTHING that Trump does. If the company's owner likes Trump's tariff war, then he also likes Trump ripping babies out of their mother's arms. There is no separating Trump from his deeds, and anyone who is willing to sell his soul for money sure doesn't need mine too.

What's a good replacement beer?

Leinenkugels was bought out a few years back my Miller-coors. And it's probably a safe bet the Coors family love what Trump is doing.

Trump taps Leinenkugel to lead new VA mental health commission

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump has named an official who had clashed with former Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and reportedly pushed for his ouster to lead a new commission focused on mental health at the department.

The VA announced on Tuesday that Jake Leinenkugel would lead the Creating Options for Veterans' Expedited Recovery Commission, which it said would examine the VA's "evidence-based therapy model for treating mental health conditions," as well as "integrated mental health approaches." The commission held its first meeting on Tuesday.

"Jake has been an ambassador for change at VA, working to implement President Trump's policies throughout the department over the past year and a half," acting VA Secretary Peter O'Rourke said in a statement. "As leader of this important new commission, Jake will continue to advocate for better care and services for his fellow Veterans."

If you’re in the Midwest Schlafly is a good one. The Schlafly who makes that beer is related to Phyllis but is a Democrat.

If you’re close to Wisconsin New Glarus is awesome. But it’s only sold in Wisconsin.

There are good brewers all over who don’t support that orange fuck or what he’s doing.

It was at a craft brew tavern/brewery and he found out there were none of his beers on tap!

That guys should know better than anyone why his beers don't really belong in a joint like that. He went big-time, nationwide, ads on TV all over. You don't go to a place like that and order what you can pick up at any store. He did a great job back when it was called micro-brews, but making it big doesn't make you king of the craft brews forever.

Get the word out. There are so many breweries and beers out there. I wont drink Samuel Adams again.

I dont get some of these people coming out politically like this and essentially cutting out a large chunk of their customers.

Same thing in the evangelical religious world.

These pastors, priests, etc essentially have cut out all the democrats from paying attention to them. Their following is drastically reduced. Their effectiveness is cut in half or more.

Stupid stuff.

My beers of choice happen to be from Mexico, not for political reasons, but for taste.

My fave is Corona Familiar which only comes in a 32 oz. size around here. It is in a brown bottle, unlike other varieties of Corona, and never ever tastes skunky. No light shock.

I also enjoy Dos Equis Amber. Very rich taste. And as for American beer, I prefer Shiner Bock. But it is hard to find because it seems to disappear fast around here (Virginia). I think there must be a lot of Texas refugees like me living here who still love that taste.

Sam Adams...only liked their Oktoberfest variety and not that much!

...most Conservatives drink Bud, Coors, Keystone, etc.

Samuel Adams was one of the first beer's to ditch the watered down swill and appeal to a real beer. I hated beer until I had my first Sam Adams. Granted I drink far more micro-brews now, but if I wanted a reasonably priced beer that was good while quickly going to the store...it was Samuel Adams Lager, Cherry Wheat, Oktoberfest, Winter Lager, Blueberry Hill, etc. Guess Rogue is going to be my new go to, which means, I won't be able to pick it up at the local grocery store and have to drive a bit more.

I'm usually drinking IPAs these days. there were so many on the market before Sam Adams got around to producing one.

If I want a lager, it's usually Stella or Heineken. My hot summer yard work or manning the barbeque beer is either gonna be High Life or PBR.

Liking the "juicy" New England style IPAs, these days, too. The occasional sour.

Used to be on a Belgian kick, but now they're mostly for the late fall, winter, when a few nice triples or Christmas release goes along with a bucket of mussels. Unless it's a Saison. I'll drink those year round if available.
