Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) said that he too would have fired the FBI agent dismissed after making anti-Trump texts while taking part in investigations of Hillary Clinton and President Trump, the Washington Free Beacon reports.
Yeah, I would have fired him too, Swalwell said in an interview with Bloomberg News.
Swalwell said Strzoks rights as an employee should be respected, but I also believe as the brother of police officers and a former prosecutor, with the stakes this high, a presidential candidate being investigated, you can't talk that way.
Even if it didn't effect the investigation, and the GAO report, the Inspector General Report, said it didnt, I still think it has to be clear that you cant do that," said Swalwell, an outspoken critic of Trump who is now thinking about running for president.
Strzok was dismissed Monday for violating the FBI's policies. The FBI had come under intense pressure from Trump and some Republicans in Congress to fire Strzok, a political lightning rod.
An Inspector General report starkly criticized Strzok for sending the anti-Trump texts, and had recommended that he be suspended for 60 days and demoted.
Swalwell said he did not think Strzok's actions had any bearing on special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.
Regardless of what Peter Strzok did, the Mueller investigation has still obtained five guilty pleas, nearly two dozen indictments, and a verdict that's probably coming soon in the Manafort case, he said.
Swalwell has been a vocal critic of Trump, especially regarding the Russia investigation. When President Trump asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions

(29,205 posts)The anti-trump (and some anti-clinton) texts should never have been "texted" or emailed to anyone.
Every job I've had where they provided me with electronic equipment (cell phones, laptops, etc)... I use that equipment for work related items only. I carry a second phone and second laptop (with my own wifi hotspot) for my personal stuff (like what I'm doing right now).
An high official in the FBI should have known better. Burner phones are cheap and anonymous. If he and his FBI girlfriend had used a pair of burner phones, he would still be at the FBI and investigating Trump right now.

(9,481 posts)The only thing that he did wrong from what I can tell is that he used his government cell phone/e-mail when expressing his opinions.
Seriously, we are going to a dark place when we politicize law enforcement and say they can't do their job because they are from the opposite political party.

(2,850 posts)The best I can do is to surmise that FBI agents aren't allowed to share political opinions with their friends and family. But maybe that only applies if it is a negative opinion about a republican. They weren't going to fire Comey for straight up ruining a Democratic campaign, so I'm pretty sure Strzok could have written the texts about a Democrat and been fine.
