He's a retired neuropsychologist....a very sober, thoughtful man. Let's try to find the video clip when it's available. He was there to talk about the effects of forced separation on children of immigrants, and had information on the children sent out of London during the Blitz and the after effects of that trauma.

(34,109 posts)who was sent out of London. She, at least, was with her sister and sent to a nice place for girls in the country somewhere. They could occasionally hear the bombs and it scared them. They were not happy there particularly but it was OK, they had friends and caretakers, chores and food and most of all the best safety there could have been in that situation. She talks about it to groups and talks a lot about it as it was a big important part of her young life. For her is was a LOT different than most but still a trauma and one that has followed her through her long life. I cannot imagine what some situations were like then and what we are doing now is simply criminal and inhumane. Different deal altogether than my friends situation but still, if she felt the trauma of it in those situations I cannot imagine what life will be like for these children we are holding.

(13,569 posts)....that even though the British children were mostly sent to loving, caring families, they were still deeply traumatized. They have been studied throughout adulthood and the effects noted. It's good to have that information.

(34,109 posts)She very well might be hiding some trauma. She spoke of it to groups fairly often and when I would talk to her it was not always pretty. Not that she ever said anything bad, just an edge I could hear in her voice. She hid it well if it was there. I cannot ask her anymore, she is pretty old and I would never wish to distress her.

(13,569 posts)To decide to send the children out must have been as traumatizing for the parents.
What a world. So much misery.

(34,109 posts)I does not have to be this way but somehow we cannot seem to stop it. So terribly sad.

(10,749 posts)But I read the essay, and I read the comments on the NYT op-ed about the essay. The RW comments are appalling. No humanity. No empathy. No decency.

(4,066 posts)Seriously, just like Trump's ancestors, Miller's were white, Europeans. Remember, Trump wants more of them. Blue-eyed and blonde preferably, but he'll take any sort of white Catholic or WASP over brown or black people.

(13,569 posts)I doubt that's Trump's preferred category of humans. Trump's family is German and Scottish.
