(90,686 posts)I can remember how to ask for directions to the train station (it's a very rhythmic query, so it stuck) and I can remember the poor man telling us, in his sad little lisp, "Es tut mir ganz leid: It does to me terrible pain."
Aside from that... Well, I have to admit that when I met my husband when I was in my 30s, his parents would occasionally talk over my head in Yiddish while I kept my face blank. After we left I would ask him questions, because I was sometimes able to catch the gist.

It's the same as when you insult someone by calling them gay.
