Don't believe for a second that "Trump is destroying the Republican Party". The GOP goes with the flow and happy voting for the representatives of the Party of Trump. The R party is not being destroyed it is just moving on down the path of degradation.

(46,045 posts)Don't even link Reagan with Eisenhower. Reagan was a total abomination. He's what made this Squatter in Chief possible.

(29,204 posts)The GOP of the late 1960s went after the racist southern white voter who traditionally would be a democratic voter... but they were "betrayed" by Democrat Lyndon Johnson and the voting rights act (after Kennedy make it an issue in 1962/3).
Nixon and the GOP decided on the "southern strategy" and transform the GOP from being the establishment country club party of the north and midwest into a culturally conservative party to appeal to the rural southern white male.

(46,045 posts)I think you can trace it all back to George Wallace. In the late '60's he was the darling on the college campus circuit. He was peddling the old bs in a more palatable form, and the college kids were lapping it up.
I was at Syracuse University at the time, and friends asked me if I wanted to go hear the cool things he was saying. I just gaped at them, "Don't you remember him standing in the doorway to keep the (at the time the word was "colored" ) student from going in."
Nixon, Atwater, et al. riffed on that, imho. There was an interesting book about him in the '90's, I do believe, called The Politics of Rage that chronicled it all.

(29,204 posts)He sought Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1964, 1972, and 1976, and ran as the American Independent Party's presidential nominee in the 1968 presidential election.

(46,045 posts)I have to admit my favorite band is Tower of Power, who've kept the soul alive for 50 years now. But they celebrate James Brown in every concert with their song, "I still be digging on James Brown."

(3,750 posts)"party of Lincoln" for a very long time. Supporters of Nixon voted Republican and Nixon was a bad leader. Supporters of Reagan voted Republican and Reagan allowed his minions to begin the dismantling of democratic liberal government. I am just saying the Trump is NOT destroying the Republican party. They have hopped on his train and are voting for Republicans like always. I just hope that many will wake up and change their ways. Lincoln I love. Very few Republicans in my lifetime could even try to hold a candle to Lincoln.
I just get really tired of hearing the GOP referred to as "the party of Lincoln".

(46,045 posts)I was picking on you. I'm sorry. It's just that I keep hearing other speak of the Republican party as the party of Reagan as if that were a good thing.

(560 posts)disenfranchised, economically anxious, culturally anxious, blah blah blah racist wing of the GOP. Nixon got the ball rolling. But Reagan brought the Dixiecrats in lock, stock, and barrel.
And, under the guise of Christian morality, he ran the most cruel and corrupt administration in modern Western history to boot.
If there is a hell, they must've given him a city.

(6,395 posts)...Reagan wouldn't even make it in today's GOP...or for that matter, Nixon. Today's GOP is trying to undo what Nixon implemented and large tax increases, amnesty, etc. of which Reagan implemented...today's GOP would just call "fake history". However, they did lay the foundation that was to become today's GOP. They talked rhetoric, ideology, etc. while not exactly following it.
However, "conservative radio" latched onto the rhetoric, expanded, re-imagined, revised history, etc. And voila...the mess we have today.
