CHESTERLAND, OH (WOIO) - Julianne Speyer, the 12-year-old Girl Scout who wrote the viral letter to the editor about sexist comments received a personal letter from the former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Clinton is a former Girl Scout and gave Julianne kudos.
Clinton wrote in the personal letter that she was proud of Julianne for "using your voice to speak up."
Julianne was inspired to write a letter to the editor of the Maple Leaf after she heard a comment that "offended and disappointed her" while participating in the Fourth of July Parade in Chesterland. In a letter to the editor of the Geauga County Maple Leaf Julianne said, The announcer labeled the Boy Scouts as future leaders of America, she wrote, and he said the Girl Scouts were just having fun.
After the letter appeared on Facebook it went viral. That led to Julianne and her parents making an appearance in New York on the Today Show, where she received a standing ovation after reading her letter aloud.
In an exclusive interview with Cleveland 19 just days after the letter went viral Julianne said, "I could just scream the message the girls can be anything they want to be. They can be in charge one day, we can be the leaders of America."
