In this video, Bill Browder talks about the Sergei Magnitsky and how Vladimir Putin had his goons murder him in prison and how he, Browder, was now the number one enemy of Vladimir Putin. He talked about how he lobbied the US Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act, which cracked down on the movement of money into America by numerous oligarchs in Russia, primarily thru money laundering. It had become his mission in life. He said the two sponsors of the bill in the US Senate were Ben Cardin and John McCain.
If Vladimir Putin hates the Magnitsky Act, then he must hate the Senators that sponsored the bill, also? And if Putin hates them, then Donald Trump must hate them also.
Is that too much of a stretch?

(115,693 posts)Remember, McCain has often criticized and opposed Trump on a variety of issues, and Trump can't stand that. And McCain is an actual war hero, respected by many people on both sides of the political spectrum, while Trump is, well... not even close. I'm sure he's very jealous of McCain's reputation and the respect he commands. His sponsorship of the Magnitsky Act is only part of it - one factor but not anywhere near all of the explanation for Trump's animosity.

(111,095 posts)...which really pissed Trump off, I recall the comment trump had made during the campaign about how he liked his heroes that had not been captured? I thought that was a little odd, as well as very cruel, at the time.

(7,809 posts)It was a rethug push poll that said that he had (not adopted, had) a black child. It was a blatant attempt at using rethug bigotry against one of their own candidates.

92 Senators voted for the Magnitsky Act. Can't just be McCain.

(18,632 posts)I believe it's much more simple than that. John McCain not only didn't support MAGA, he spoke out against Trump during the campaign.
Do not underestimate the sheer pettiness of DJT to hold a grudge.

(10,721 posts)We already live in a society that is insane enough to consider McCain to be a "moderate." In the public consciousness, McCain is the epitome of the increasingly small group of relatively sane Republicans.
By attacking McCain's image, the increasingly batshit crazy Republican Party hopes to seem less crazy and more mainstream.

(10,721 posts)...I can't deny that they've had some success moving the Overton window in recent years. The mere fact that McCain is widely considered a "moderate" is proof of this.

(12,586 posts)McCain is not a product of his own hype, of telephone calls to newspapers using pseudonyms, of dictated reports of his physical condition (even to a Navy physician!), of reality television where the decisions to fire a contestant were made by the producers. McCain has always placed country before self, and suffered for that decision by spending five and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton.
Trump's doctor said he had bone spurs.
McCain demonstrates more courage and integrity in a day that Trump has in an entire life. McCain's life is not summarized by "the art of the deal," or art of the steal, to hear Trump's contractors tell it. His life is summarized by service to his constituents and country, and to the same Constitution Trump swore an oath to defend and protect, but has consistently demonstrated no intention of honoring.
In fact, whereas "honor" would appear at the top of a list of McCain's characteristics, it wouldn't make the top 1,000 of Trump's, if it appeared on the list at all.
McCain admits his failures -- he says the ending of his first marriage is his biggest regret -- but Donnie Two Scoops knows he is practically perfect in every way, and knows more about every subject than anyone who has studied for years.
Trump hates John McCain because he knows that standing next to him he appears small and weak.
Trump hates John McCain because he hates everyone except Ivanka -- and even that may change if she keeps disagreeing with her father's policies, such as the one to separate mothers from their children.
Basically, Trump hates everyone who is not him, and he's not sure of himself.
