It seems to me like they're saying the same thing while saying they're not participating.

They have a history of calling out Trump in this area and include reference to it in this article.

I think they went a bit "look at me" but I also see it as no big deal.

“Trump’s strategy is pretty clear: By branding reporters as liars, he apparently hopes to discredit, disrupt or bully into silence anyone who challenges his version of reality. By undermining trust in news organizations and delegitimizing journalism and muddling the facts so that Americans no longer know who to believe, he can deny and distract and help push his administration’s far-fetched storyline.”

today explaining why they aren't participating today's press protest against Trump's treatment of the press?

Ok then.

all the while claiming that they're not participating and aren't going to write an editorial on that subject on that day?

that's like an nfl player saying "i'm not going to kneel. see this knee that i'm bending and see how it's now touching the ground? that's exactly what i'm not going to do."

The editorial page gave this weak excuse after first saying they already wrote about the topic because he's worried that it might look like "groupthink", or Trump would start screaming about some “collusion”.

Just by announcing that they were refusing to condemn Trump's assault on the Constitutional duties of the free press, the LATimes us making a tacit endorsement of his continuing attacks on Free Speech. That's a cowardly stance from any newspaper, but the Fourth Estate also has a responsibility to the public that goes far beyond the ego of the editor. Stand up for the Free Press is far greater than any misplaced illusion of "groupthink".
