Rashida Tlaib, the Michigan Democrat all but certain to become one of the first Muslim women to win election to Congress, suggested last week that shell oppose the California liberal's bid to remain atop the party.
For Tlaib, 42, the concern is not so much ideological as it is generational a fact that highlights the hunger among a younger crop of Democrats for a changing of the guard atop the party. She and like-minded candidates are running as Washington outsiders and vowing to shake up Capitol Hill.
Its not an ideological thing, said one Democratic lawmaker, speaking anonymously to discuss the delicate leadership issue. When they get to Washington for their orientation, theyre going to see the freshman class as change agents. Do you think the first vote theyre going to cast is to reelect the entire 80-year-old team?
Jahana Hayes, a liberal who won Tuesdays primary race to replace outgoing Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Esty in Connecticut, has also said shell oppose Pelosi as party leader. Andrew Janz, a labor-backed Californian vying to unseat Rep. Devin Nunes (R), and Jared Golden, a "Medicare for all" proponent challenging GOP Rep. Bruce Poliquin in Maine, are vowing the same. And Kara Eastman, the progressive candidate who toppled former Rep. Brad Ashford in a Democratic primary this year in Nebraska, also wants a top-down reshuffling.

(90,699 posts)...to play that game, they all should have a prepared response along the lines of: "We have not yet taken back the House. We will cross that bridge when we come to it, when every member of the House votes in the issue." End of statement, no further comment.
Anyone who engages in this discussion is falling into into a RW trap. As Michelle Obama used to say, "Don't be fooled."

(5,272 posts)candidates or not. What they should be saying is that they'll support a specific challenger's nomination, and in lieu of that they should probably keep their powder dry and not put themselves in a pickle for later when a candidate to the right of Pelosi ends up being the main contender. There's a lot of room in the Democratic party on that side of her. Then what will they do?

(92,197 posts)message going after the republicans and the trump administration.
There is plenty of time after the primaries to decide who will or won't be the Democratic majority and minority leader, and at that time that is when the Democrats should be debating each other
We are being played by the media, republicans, and other forces, and some are predictablly falling into their trap

(5,969 posts)by the Repubs who use Pelosi as a boogeyman to drum up support. It's the same story each election. Sad to see that more Dems are falling for it.
As the article rightly points out, age doesn't seem to be the issue for other politicians to get the support of progressives.

(92,197 posts)F**KING MIDTERMS to debate who will be the Democratic lead
The only thing bullshit like this accomplishes, is dividing the Democrats, before the primaries, when THAT IS THE LAST THING WE NEED
All the Democrats have to do before the midterms is STAY ON MESSAGE, and go after trump and the republicans, but no let's try to bring up UNECESSARY divisionary issue among Democrats just to see if we can divide party the party before the midterms.
We don't need the f**king Russians, republicans, etc. we have ourselves to do it.
For once, can we just wait until AFTER the midterms and focus on the republicans and the trump administration, and then after the midterms then decide majority/minority leader.
These circular firing squads are wonderful.
Forget the polls, we have an uphill battle just based on the number of seats that Democrats have to defend verses the number of seats the republicans have to defend.
It is time to stop the debating among ourselves until after the midters.
