Since the position he had was for a 10-year term, we certainly got to know him over that time.
I sortof started paying attention when Boutros Boutros-Ghali was SG and the controversy around him... then the push to get another African after Boutros-Ghali was denied another term, particularly since the continent faced so many many issues. Regardles, he had his own scandals during the 2 terms as well, but the institution has somehow managed to survive.
Condolences to his family.
