Rose McGowan said she is heartbroken by a report that Asia Argento, the Italian actress and a fellow accuser of disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, faced her own allegation of sexual assault.
A bombshell story from the New York Times reported Argento paid former child actor Jimmy Bennett $380,000 after he claimed she assaulted him in a California hotel room when he was 17 and she was 37. The age of consent in California is 18.
I got to know Asia Argento ten months ago, McGowan wrote on Twitter. Our commonality is the shared pain of being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein. My heart is broken. I will continue my work on behalf of victims everywhere.

McGowan and Argento emerged as two of the most prominent faces of the Me Too movement after they accused Weinstein of assault. Those allegations were first revealed in Ronan Farrows New Yorker report about the producer.

(16,387 posts)Lots of "he loved it" type comments from people while trying to paint Argento as a victim of extortion. Looks like MeToo is eating itself today on social media.

Female teacher sleeps with 17 year old male student- people say how lucky he is and say things like where were these teachers when I was in school.
Same exact thing at play here. If you swapped the genders and left every other factor the same the responses would be totally different.

(16,179 posts)That being said there are PLENTY of young women who are attracted to older men because the men their own age seem immature or uninteresting.
These discussions are good for our culture, perhaps, if the culture starts talking and thinking more deeply about sexuality and healthy sexual responsibility. Theres so much selfishness embedded in these stories and far too little respect and empathy.
We are an eighth inch deep with a lot of blind spots, as a culture.
And this new generation sure is different.

(5,500 posts)Its hard when someone we admire does something terrible. Our first instinct is to lash out at the victim - what did they do wrong?
This is, ironically, why #metoo is so important. Victims (male or female) are constantly treated the same way - especially when the perpetrator is admired in the community. Everyone wants to cling to the idea they had of the perpetrator, despite that idea being shattered.

(4,238 posts)It doesn't absolve Weinstein of his crimes, it doesn't harm the #MeToo movement, it's just what it is. It's a shame Bourdain was involved with this woman in his final days.
