He was similarly awful in all the Republican debates - which also didn't matter because the media covered all his rallies had him on their shows and gave him hours and hours of free publicity.

could beat Trump in a real debate, but we don't have real debates any more. We have staged events where the moderators themselves aren't very competent; the questions are superficial; and there is no meaningful opportunity for any kind of rebuttal. They're just show biz. And even at these fake debates Hillary was the clear winner in terms of actually knowing and understanding the issues, but it didn't matter to most people and probably didn't change anybody's mind.

Anyhow, if I wanted to see the floor mopped with Trump at a debate I'd choose someone like Adam Schiff, who actually knows something about government.
