Florida Judge Throws Charter School Amendment off Ballot

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida judge is throwing a proposed amendment dealing with charter schools off the November ballot.

Circuit Judge John Cooper ruled Monday that the amendment proposed by the Constitution Revision Commission is misleading and does not tell voters what it really does.

Amendment 8 combines several ideas into one amendment including term limits for school board members. But the amendment also makes it easier for charter schools to get set up around the state. Charter schools receive public money, but are run privately.

Cooper pointed out that the amendment does not even use the words charter schools but would affect their creation.

The lawsuit was filed by the League of Women Voters of Florida. It was one of several challenging amendments approved by the commission that meets every 20 years.

You want your schools?, pay for it out of the non-taxed church till. Public Schools work JUST fine and could use the money siphoned off for these christian madrassas.

The property taxes are what fund our schools, yet big box stores ( for example) ask for and receive reductions in taxes to locate in a community. This is after they have numerous loopholes and breaks that small businesses and individuals never have a chance to use. They pay low wages and lousy benefits that force the employees to apply for SNAP and Medicaid, furthering the use of state funds. No wonder so many states are in financial binds.

There were private secondary schools that got government money. It made private education affordable since the tuition was only the difference between actual cost and the subsidy. These schools were run by foundations and not for profit.

There was also an exit exam that you had to pass in order to graduate. It was a final exam that had to meet minimum standards. Schools would generally exceed this standard. The school I went to was called a Lyceum and had the following courses:

HBS-A- 4 modern langauges, one year latin. "light" on math and science- liberal arts
HBS-B - 4 modern langauges, one year latin. Heavy on math and science- engineers
Gymnasium A - "Light" on math and science, 4 modern languages, latin, greek - clergy
Gymnasium B - Heavy on everything!

Everything was 6 years.

This is a term that Europeans understand of course, but in the US "gymnasium" means something else.
I'm sure the difference is clear to you, but it may not be clear to some of our DU readers.

But in Oregon, citizen initiative petitions are limited to one and only one topic, and the courts are very strict about what constitutes an unconstitutional multi-topic petition.

I'm going to make a wholly unfounded assumption that this Amendment was proposed by a bunch of conservative Christian types hoping to re-direct the stream of expenditures for public schools into their own pockets. I will further conjecture that they're not at all troubled by their own deceitful behavior in advancing their issue.

They'll do anything to make a buck off the public and diminish our vital public schools using shady back-door techniques.

Thanks goodness for our courts and democratic organizations like League of Women Voters and ACLU......

a large group of liberal organizations and blogs, and the professional groups like ACLU that closely track what these evil people are doing, and they are fighting back.

I just don't know where we would be without them and the courts at this time in history, since almost all members of the general public don't have the time or resources to follow all the evil doings of hundreds of very wealthy miscreants.

Thank goodness for these exceptionally good and dedicated people on the side of fairness and democracy.
