Obama's reading list is the respite we need

It's the classiest, most passive-aggressive move Barack Obama could make: He posted a list of books he's been reading on Facebook.

"This summer I've been absorbed by new novels," the former president wrote Sunday, "revisited an old classic, and reaffirmed my faith in our ability to move forward together when we seek the truth."

Obama didn't rage against his enemies or attack the pillars of our democracy. He didn't call anybody a "dog." He didn't brag about his own bestsellers - or the size of his book-reading hands.

Instead, he just presented a small window into the mind of a man who appreciates how books can alter the pace of our lives and illuminate the world.

1. "Educated," by Tara Westover (Random House).

2. "Warlight," by Michael Ondaatje (Knopf).

3. "A House for Mr. Biswas," by V.S. Naipaul (Vintage).

4. "An American Marriage," by Tayari Jones (Algonquin).

5. "Factfulness," by Hans Rosling (Flatiron).

A House for Mr. Biswas, a long time ago.

i'm sorry his single favorite book last year isn't on this list also because it's wonderful and a fantastic antidote to trumpism and the relentless darkness in the news: Steven Pinker's: Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason.

If you don't know why you're a Democrat or what a liberal is, much less feel proud and glad, or what our liberal constitution's relationship with humanism, reason, science and progress is, read this. If you want to feel hope and know that every intelligent, knowledgeable person should be hopeful, read this. It's very enjoyable.

i need to read it again.

and ironically, put "Educated" on the holds list at my library. Apparently President Obama and I have similar tastes!

President Clinton was another avid reader.

Non-president Trump isn't a reader, and that's obvious by his low-IQ vocabulary.
