CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Protesters on Monday night toppled the controversial "Silent Sam" statue on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

More than 300 protesters first gathered at the Peace and Justice Plaza at about 7 p.m., before marching to the base of the statue, calling for its removal. By 9:30 p.m., the statue was on the ground and the crowd was cheering.

"Silent Sam" had been standing on the UNC campus since 1913.

Protesters first sectioned off the area around the controversial statue with large banners, blocking it from view. Throughout the course of the evening, people in the crowd speculated about what might be going on behind the banners, but no one confessed to knowing the plan

In 1913 President Woodrow Wilson introduced segregation into federal government agencies. Black employees were separated from other workers in offices, restrooms, and cafeterias. Some were downgraded; others discharged on fictitious grounds.

11. Exactly what Repub legislature wanted

The Repub NC legislature passed laws in recent years that prevented The University from taking any action on the statue such as relocating it. The legislators knew it was only a matter of time before someone would stupidly tear down the statue and give the RW a convenient campaign issue and symbol. Running against The University and its liberal, commie, n@@@r loving, elitist, ... cohort in Chapel Hill has been a RW staple since before Silent Sam was erected and long before the modern GOP had evolved from the Dixiecrats.

The fall of Sam is nothing to celebrate; the GOP has its symbol for the election.

If there is any favor to the GOP - it's that they don't have to take a position with this caricature and lingering sore.

That have been torn down?

Not like this is the first - I suspect there will be greater issues.

I defer to your regional knowledge - but hope for a more positive outcome.

Maybe times ARE changing - took this long to tear 'er down...

Onward!

I've heard of some being painted or grafitti'd.

It's not a usual thing for a group of people to get together to destroy public property. It will be used against the Democrats come the mid-terms, which are soon.

against Democrats. This will be added to it as a political tool to get their base worked up. How effective it'll be, I don't know. But it'll be used, all right. More GOP'ers will go to vote.

Not a smart thing to do this close to the mid-terms, IMO. The focus should be on Trump's misdeeds. Not ours (destroying public property qualifies as a misdeed, regardless of the reason).

Keeping the issue at the forefront of news coverage here is exactly what they wanted.

They want this to stay in the forefront. They will now press the Governor and Attorney General about prosecution for those who did it, and makenit a wedge issue. They will paint it not not as a racial issue but as an issue about law enforcement and say that any candidate on the left who doesn’t aggressively condem this and call for prosecution supports rioters and mob rule.

In all honesty I bet the GOP hopes more statues keep coming down. They know how to play that.

If their fucking symbol is some cheap ass, hollow piece of shit traitor to his country, JUST FUCK THEM

This is actually a great representation of the Retrumplican Party. It looks fucking strong and powerful on the outside, but inside it's just a fucking hollow void covered in cheap tin and bird shit.

If that's what a majority of South Carolinians want, then fuck 'em. Stretch Armstrong wouldn't be able to "reach-out" to people like that.

Your response is exactly the kind of thing the NORTH Carolina GOP wants. They changed the laws a few years ago to prevent The University from being able to find an appropriate solution. Now they have their emotional symbol.

Check out the comments at the WRAL story.

Confederates were treasonous traitors to the United States. Yes, they are historical, but we can keep history by placing them in Museums.

I don't care the circumstances.

Those things are symbols of hate. They have nothing to do with cultural heritage and everything to do with Jim Crow. Just look at when they were erected. Right in the heyday of The Jim Crow period. Do we really want to continue to honor Jim Crow and the era of lynching.
