What exactly did Russia do to voting machines and databases in 2016?

What exactly did Russia do to voting machines and databases in 2016, and what does that mean for the midterms? Here's an excerpt from our interview with Barbara Simons, a computer scientist and expert on election security. Full interview here:

Then one must accept that they fucked with things and changed results.

You don't break into a liquor store at night just to walk around and see what's on the shelves.

On social media and forums just like this one where dissent was created and advocated along with false stories and reports.

Do you have a link to the investigation where the paper ballots counts were compared to the final results sent? As for paperless voting, there's no way to investigate, since a good hacker can erase any evidence of changes made in the count. I am tired of seeing this meme that 'No indication any results were hacked' when there is no actual investigation of whether changes were made. (meaning comparing paper ballots with electronic results) (comparing electronic votes with electronic results is useless)

Actually, that is exactly how state-level hacking works. You break into their systems, gather what intel you can, and hopefully leave no trace that you were ever there. Changing things increases the risk you get caught. Not changing anything and remaining undetected lets you continue to monitor the system, and if the need ever arises, such as war, you can then screw around with things and not worry about being detected.

Why would they need this information for a "future war".

I don't understand why so many people won't eve consider the possibility that yes, votes my have been tampered with and results changed.

but there is a way to check my account and see what charges have been posted. If I could not check my account and had no money, I would feel like I was stolen from. I have no way to see how my vote was posted. And we have fuckhead for president. Do I feel robbed? Hell yes. Whether votes were stolen or not is speculation. And there is no way to find out. I sure as hell wouldn't let my bank operate this way. Why is democracy being operated this way? So gop and Russia can steal it.
